Reggio Parma Festival: entrusted with Yuval Avital's rich program of events 2022

This year's Reggio Parma Festival program unveiled: The Bestiary of the Earth by multimedia artist and composer Yuval Avital. From June to December 2022 a rich program of exhibitions, performances, installations and events.

On June 9, the Reggio Parma Festival’s 2022 project was unveiled: Yuval Avital’s Bestiary of the Earth. A rich program of events, including exhibitions, performances and installations, will take place over the course of the year between the cities of Parma and Reggio Emilia, involving different venues including museums and theaters, communities and local authorities. In fact, the Reggio Parma Festival decided this year to entrustmultimedia artist and composer Yuval Avital (Jerusalem, 1977) with the conception of a unique artistic path to involve the best artistic expressions, both local and national.

So here it is that from June to December 2022 The Bestiary of the Earth is being planned between the cities of Parma and Reggio Emilia: a project inspired by the tradition that has connoted the artistic, religious and scientific culture of this area of Emilia since the Middle Ages. Realized by meeting with numerous musical, cultural and artistic associations in the area, the project is in close collaboration with the three theater foundations that are members of the Reggio Parma Festival, namely Fondazione I Teatri di Reggio Emilia, Fondazione Teatro Regio di Parma and Fondazione Teatro Due di Parma, with whom Avital shared the elaboration and definition of each activity. With The Bestiary of the Earth, the artist addresses the sense of incompleteness felt by man, a feeling that turns into a propulsive drive to research and discover the innermost folds of the ego, in a hybridization or contamination with the “bestial” aspect inherent in each of us.
Where does humanity end and bestiality begin? Where does the monster hide, and above all, who is he? The artist seeks to answer these questions in a multifaceted experiential and multimedia process, consisting of dozens of new works including performances, video-art, visual and photographic works, sculptures, scores, theatrical staging and installations.

With the presentation of the project, the first two initiatives kicked off: the participatory monographic exhibition Anatomie squisite, at the Civic Museums of Reggio Emilia, and the icono-sound installation of Il Canto dello Zooforo at the Casa del Suono in Parma.

The former is on view through July 24 and is curated by Alessandro Gazzotti and offers a dialogue with the Spallanzani Collection; the latter is on view through Oct. 9, 2022.

"The Bestiary of the Earth “ is a journey marked by many stages-exhibitions, performances, installations-that converge in a multimedia fresco with a double vector: Bestiary understood as man discovering, sometimes not easy to accept, the animal hidden in the depths of the IO. On the other hand, the Earth perceived as a place of departure, fertile ground from which everything is born. The bestiary comes to life in two cities that come together as a chimera, as a hybrid being, to give voice to an artistic operation full of challenges in which opera houses become creative forges of contemporary art, natural territories are transformed into scenarios for performative actions, museum collections come into play dialoguing with contemporaneity and imagination. An art ritual to create and return, in the post-Covid era, a choral emotion in which the I, rediscovering itself in the encounter and dialogue with the YOU, creates the WE.” explained Yuval Avital.
