A major international conference on Magna Graecia, titled Greece, Magna Graecia, Europe, curated by Louis Godart, distinguished archaeologist, member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei and former Councilor for the Preservation of the Artistic Heritage at the Presidency of the Italian Republic, is being held on Saturday, Sept. 22 and Saturday, Sept. 23, on the occasion of European Heritage Days: will take place at the National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria and is promoted by the museum itself, in collaboration with the Bova Life association and the Greek Embassy in Italy. The aim of the conference is, as stated in the presentation, to pay homage to the Greek and Magna Graecia roots of Europe, as part of the aims, shared among European populations, of deepening the knowledge of the history and cultural roots of the territory in its material and immaterial components, in a confrontation that crosses geographical and mental boundaries.
The opening of the proceedings is set for 3:30 p.m. on the 22nd: MArRC director Carmelo Malacrino will speak for greetings, along with Bova Life secretaryg eneral Luca Micheletta. Also present will be the ambassador of Greece to Italy, Tasia Athanasiou, and local authorities: the president of the Regional Council of Calabria, Nicola Irto, and the mayor of Roghudi (Grecanica area of the region), Pierpaolo Zavettieri. The director of the Byzantine and Christian Museum of Athens, Katerina Dellaporta, the conference’s scientific curator Louis Godart, and underwater archaeologist Filippo Avilia, of IULM University in Milan, will speak.
Sunday morning the conference moves to Bova: after greetings from Bova Mayor Santo Casile, scholars Pasquale Amato (University for Foreigners of Reggio Calabria) and Giuseppe Caridi (University of Messina) will speak. Moderating the discussion will be writer and director Giorgio Neri. Admission to attend the conference is free, while the ticket to visit the museum will have the ordinary cost.
