Ravenna: special openings, guided tours and a concert for Theodoric Week

From August 28 to September 1, 2024, Theodoric Week, now in its fourth year, returns. Ravenna celebrates the king of the Ostrogoths, Theodoric the Great, ahead of the 1,500th anniversary of his death that will occur in 2026.

Now in its fourth year, Theodoric Week continues to celebrate the King of the Ostrogoths, Theodoric the Great, ahead of the 1,500th anniversary of his death in 2026. This year, the program offers visitors, from August 28 to September 1, special openings, guided tours, historical insights and an evening concert.

Thanks to the collaboration between the educational services and staff of the National Museums of Ravenna, along with the Angelo Mariani Music Association and the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Ravenna, participants will have the opportunity to explore and fully understand the history and architecture of some of the city’s most important UNESCO sites. These initiatives not only pay tribute to Theodoric the Great, but also contribute to the enhancement of Ravenna’s cultural heritage.

“It will be one more opportunity,” comments the director of the National Museums of Ravenna Andrea Sardo, “to be able to enjoy not only the Theodoric sites in the enchantment of the night atmospheres, but also to keep alive the memory and pay homage to the great Gothic king.”

"The concert by La Pifarescha, an ensemble with historical instruments, dedicated to Theodoric the Great," stresses Romano Valentini, artistic director of the Angelo Mariani, “will be a musical journey celebrating his life, achievements and cultural legacy. Exploring themes of war and peace, conquest and coexistence, it will embrace the Western dimension, connections with the Eastern world and the traditions that enriched his reign.”
