Procida 2022, a big paper boat to cross the canal: Frank Bölter's performance

As part of the cultural program of Procida Italian Capital of Culture 2022, a collective performance by German artist Frank Bölter will be held in Procida’s Marina Grande on Friday, April 29.

The Paper Fleet, this is the title of the performance, will consist of the construction of a paper boat about nine meters long by two and a half meters wide and as many meters high during a workshop with Procida residents, students and temporary citizens. It will be a collective creation intended to lead to reflection on universal themes such as unity among peoples and theacceptance of diversity.

Bölter will attempt to cross the Procida Channel with this fragile vessel aware that it will never make it to the other shore, bringing back to the center of the community’s reflection the many journeys that have no certainty of safe landing.

The co-creation path of the performance will be supported by I Teatrini Centro Campano Teatro d’Animazione, which will conduct workshops with 2022 children from schools in the Phlegraean Area. During the workshops, the children, under the guidance of the operators of I Teatrini, will address the themes ofinclusion,acceptance and cooperation through moments of reading and creative writing, which will result in the creation of small paper boats, following the origami technique, through the use of environmentally sustainable materials. At the conclusion of the workshop, children will participate in Frank Bolter’s performance by bringing their own paper works, which will symbolically accompany the artist’s boat on this journey toward the impossible.

The performance is intended to recall the European Solidarity - Save lives, change Dublin initiative launched by a network of NGOs, European organizations and personalities active on issues of civil rights, reception and integration.
