Presented the program for the bicentennial of the Prado Museum, one of the most important museums in the world and Madrid’s main museum.
Museum director Miguel Falomir announced the celebrations, for which seven million euros have been allocated, which will begin on November 19, 2018 and end on December 31, 2019.
According to the announcement, the Galería Jónica will be opened with classical sculpture, the so-called Tesoro del Delfín, or collection of about a hundred works of goldsmithing unique in the world, will be exhibited, and nine rooms of Flemish and Dutch sculpture from the 17th century will be opened.
Also scheduled are many temporary exhibitions, including"Circa 1819" where 75 European works created in the decades immediately before and after the Prado’s opening will be on display: works by Goya, Turner, Constable, Friedrich, Delacroix and Géricault.
Another major temporary exhibition will be"Velázquez, Rembrandt y los Siglos de Oro Holandés y Español" in collaboration with the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
A notable initiative will be the"Prado Itinerante": for one month a major work will be loaned to each autonomous community in Spain, excluding the community of Madrid, and a traveling exhibition will be organized around Velázquez’s famous painting Las Meninas.
This is designed to bring the museum and its works of art closer to geographic areas that usually cannot enjoy them and also to shut-ins, the blind and the infirm.
Big news will be the inclusion of the documentary fund on the website to make it accessible to the scientific community.
