On Thursday, February 21, 2019, at 12 p.m., Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang (Quanzhou, 1957) will hold the Explosion Studio event at thePompeii Amphitheater, which involves the artist’s use of gunpowder and colored fumes to recreate the eruption of Mount Vesuvius that destroyed Pompeii in 79 AD.

Cai Guo-Qiang is famous for his artistic creations with fireworks, a quest the artist has been pursuing since 1984. Moreover, Cai Guo-Qiang has recently come to prominence in our country with an exhibition at the Uffizi and with the “fireworks by day” event that enchanted Florence.



The event will be attended by the director of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, Alfonsina Russo, the director of the MANN in Naples, Paolo Giulierini, and the artistic curator of the project, Jérôme Neutres.

The Explosion Studio show, a closed event reserved only for those who have been invited, will serve as the opening of the exhibition In the Volcano. Cai Guo-Qiang and Pompeii, also curated by Jérôme Neutres, which will open at the MANN in Naples the following day, Friday, Feb. 22, at 4:30 p.m.: the exhibition will display the results of the explosions from the show that precedes it. The exhibition will remain open until May 20.
