For the first time it will be possible to see up close the reliefs of the Months by Benedetto Antelami (Valle d’Intelvi, c. 1150 - Parma, c. 1230) preserved in the first gallery of the Parma Baptistery, and thus usually visible from below. The sculptures, in fact, from September 12, 2020 to August 31, 2021 will be temporarily moved from the loggia to the niches on the ground floor, allowing visitors a close-up view that would otherwise be impossible.
The sculptures, fourteen in all (twelve months and two seasons) tell the passage of time through an activity or trade that characterizes the month itself, accompanied by the corresponding sign of the zodiac: they are among the greatest masterpieces of the early thirteenth century. Initially, the months were to decorate the new portal for the Cathedral, but already during the 13th century the work was dismantled (probably because the passing of Benedetto Antelami prevented the work from being completed) and the months were relocated to the Baptistery as early as the fourth decade of the 13th century.
The months will be on view every day on the above dates from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tickets are 12 euros for full and 10 euros for reduced (with the same ticket you can also visit the Diocesan Museum). Reductions are provided for schools. The initiative is part of the Diocese’s program for Parma Italian Capital of Culture 2020+21. For more information you can the Parma 2020+21 website.
