On May 24 and 25, 2019, the third edition of Open Studios will be held, an initiative that will involve all of Italy with more than 900 events related toarchitecture in more than 90 provinces. Conceived by the National Council of Architects, Planners, Landscape Architects and Conservators, the event aims to spread architectural culture and renew sensitivity to the environment, landscape and territories.
The program will be wide-ranging: urban workshops to reinterpret and revisit public spaces; conferences with children, teens, and parents to design the “desired city”; educational activities to raise awareness of the appreciation of architectural and landscape heritage; lectures on the role and social function of the architect; video and documentary film screenings; musical performances; lectures in the square; and visits to historic buildings. Plus: debates with local communities, professional firms moving into the squares and streets of cities to be ever closer to citizens and to decide together on the future of areas and parts of the urban fabric.
Declares National Council President Giuseppe Cappochin: "The goal of Italian architects is to trigger and continuously feed an in-depth debate on architecture, territories and cities, through public discussion, lighting a spotlight on a new demand for architecture, understood as a demand for culture, quality, transparency and legality. And Open Studios is a piece of this strategy. Indeed, the policy choices inherent to architecture and landscape intervene in the development of the country in terms of environmental, economic, social, and cultural sustainability; they intervene to counter climate modification, to favor the resolution of social hardships, and to develop competitive economies for a general improvement of the social and human level."
“A first for our country. For two days architecture will be the central theme of debates and events. These numbers denote a great willingness on the part of architects to participate: to open their studios, to go out into the squares, to involve the community to be together an active part for the improvement of the world in which we live. To testify, with concrete examples, that the purpose of architecture is to improve the habitat and well-being of citizens and to reaffirm that having a beautiful and healthy living space is everyone’s right,” added Alessandra Ferrari, Coordinator of the Department for the Promotion of Architectural Culture and the Figure of the Architect.
