Nighttime guided tours of the Colosseum return

Restarting July 17, every Saturday until Oct. 30, are nighttime guided tours of the Colosseum with an all-new edition of The Moon over the Colosseum.

From Saturday, July 17, until October 30, 2021, La Luna sul Colosseo returns with acompletely revamped edition: the series of guided tours starting at 8:10 p.m. and for groups of up to 20 people that allows people to visit Rome’s famous landmark monument at night. And for the first time it will also be possible to visit the House of the Vestal Virgins in the Roman Forum at dusk. This year the initiative organized in collaboration with Electa will focus on the discovery of the underground, and the new and evocative itinerary is made possible by the recent restoration of the entire surface of the spaces that housed beasts, gladiators and stage apparatuses.

During the visit, the narrative of the topography of the valley where the Colosseum was built will be developed while, as we traverse the underground area, we will discover the materials with which the amphitheater was built. The route will continue along the perimeter corridor to the arena floor, passing in front of the Aedicule of the Way of the Cross, reconstructed with the original 19th-century fragments, and concluding on the arena floor itself with an extraordinary overlook of the hypogea and a 360-degree look at the stands that housed more than 60,000 spectators.

The evening opening of the House of the Vestal Virgins, starting at 7:20 p.m. for groups of up to 20 people, and for the remaining Wednesdays in July (July 21 and 28), is made possible by the completion of conservation work with the setting up of the rooms of the house of the virgin priestesses, who guarded the city’s sacred hearth. The spaces that can now be visited, including the lava stone grindstone room, where Vesta’s priestesses probably made mola salsa, a sacred flatbread for the cults related to the rites they officiated at, surround the courtyard of the complex where the circular temple that guarded the sacred fire stands.
