Montepulciano, at the Fortress the first edition of an exhibition dedicated to old and rare books

On Sept. 23 and 24, 2023, the Montepulciano Fortress will host the first edition of 'Montepulciano City of Old and Rare Books,' an event dedicated to antique books and prints, with exhibitions, conferences and presentations.

In September, Montepulciano becomes the capital of ancient and rare books for two days: on Saturday, September 23 and Sunday, September 24, 2023, in fact, the Fortress of Montepulciano (pictured) will host the first edition Montepulciano city of ancient and rare books, a large exhibition dedicated to these special and precious objects. The event held in the city of Poliziano includes an exhibition of antique books and prints at the Fortress, as well as debates and short presentations that will be held in rotation by cultural personalities, so that on Saturday, Sept. 23 to Sunday, Sept. 24, a rich calendar of events aimed at enthusiasts or those simply curious about antique books will be offered.

Moreover, all the initiatives will have a very special note: in addition to renowned Italian and foreign scholars and professors, some 20 students from the poliziani high schools (classical, scientific and linguistic), who have been involved in the project in recent months, will take the floor and illustrate their research, in order to strengthen the cultural bond that must unite the generations through the transmission of knowledge.

“For some years now Montepulciano,” says Mayor Michele Angiolini, “has been promoting and hosting numerous initiatives related to this particular ’object,’ the rare and antique book, which combines in itself several peculiar aspects: the antiquarian value, the content of the book itself, often the historical-artistic relevance for the engravings it contains, or its binding, the greater or lesser history that can be documented in it. We are confident that the highly qualified exhibition proposal and the quality of the guests involved will make it a must-attend event for connoisseurs of the field, but also a unique opportunity for the curious and novice alike. In addition, I would like to emphasize the involvement of the new generations in the event, through the Police High Schools, so as to make this first edition an opportunity to enrich and bring the younger segments of the population closer to the world of culture and knowledge.”

“This is,” comments Lucia Musso, councilor for culture, “the first edition of an event that we want to grow and make part of the rich cultural fabric of Montepulciano. Works of great prestige will be exhibited and original, even topical themes will be addressed in the literary salons offered during the two-day event; all this, always seeking the greatest possible popular participation.”

“In addition to the exhibition,” explains Paolo Tiezzi Mestri, president of the Società Bibliografica Toscana, the lead association in organizing the event, “conferences and literary salons are planned in various places in the city-the Town Hall, the Civic Museum, the Fortress itself-on the topics covered by the books: from Tuscan comedy in the 1500s, to agriculture in the Renaissance, from Dominican sanctity, to local archaeology, to the final day of an international conference on the two patron saints of Europe, Bridget of Sweden and Catherine of Siena, and an authentic rarity: an exhibition of books printed in the 1500s by women printers, masters of their printing presses.”

The initiative is organized by the Società Bibliografica Toscana, with the patronage and support of the Municipality of Montepulciano, and involves a number of institutes, institutions and associations, including the Licei Poliziani - I.I.S.S. Agnolo Poliziano, the Institute for the Enhancement of the Historical Abbeys of Tuscany (ISVAST), the Società Storica Poliziana, the Diocese of Montepulciano - Chiusi - Pienza, the Municipal Library and Historical Archives “Piero Calamandrei,” the Associazione Proloco Montepulciano, the Rotary Fellowship of old books, and the Rotary Club of Chianciano, Chiusi - Montepulciano. The event, which also has the patronage of the Region of Tuscany, is part of the events in support of Valdichiana 2026 Candidate for Italian Capital of Culture.
