Milan, kicking off Amart 2023. From Ghirlandaio to Dürer, works of the highest quality on display.

From November 8 to 12, the new edition of Amart, an exhibition-market of high-end antiques, kicks off in Milan. Many masterpieces are on display, from Ghirlandaio to Julian Schnabel via Albrecht Dürer. Here are some previews.

The new edition of AMART, an important exhibition-market of high-level antiques, born in 2018 and held in the spaces of the Museo della Permanente, kicks off in Milan from November 8 to 12. Sixty-five galleries from all over Italy and abroad, specializing in different artistic areas from antique to contemporary, to offer the public of collectors and enthusiasts an event that promises to be of great quality, like past editions.

“The excellence of the Antiques sector will be exhibiting at the Museo della Permanente,” says Michele Subert, president of the Associazione Antiquari Milanesi, which, together with Promo.Ter Unione, is organizing the event: “expert gallerists for every specialty, from paintings, sculptures, furniture, precious, silver, carpets and many other objects of the highest collector and artistic value. An offer that, beyond commercial value, gives credit to the greatness of art and the professionalism of the antiquarians themselves, disseminators of a profound cultural tradition that today takes on an unprecedented connotation of contemporaneity.”

Many discoveries await collectors and art enthusiasts: on the grand tour of works in this fifth edition can already be counted, from Callea Antichità Design, a masterpiece by Domenico del Ghirlandaio, the Madonna and Child known as Madonna Wendelstadt, a work from around 1472. This is a painting long known to art historians and recently recognized as a work by Domenico Ghirlandaio by Andrea De Marchi and Cecilia Martelli. The painting was owned by Matilda Rausch Dodge Wilson, wife of John Dodge, one of the founders of the “Dodge Motor Company.” In the Old master sector, the work by Goswijn van der Weyden proposed by the Romigioli Gallery, a Madonna and Child Enthroned between Saints Catherine of Alexandria and Margaret of Antioch, circa 1500-1510, can also boast an illustrious provenance. (Oil on panel). Documented in the Grand Duchy of Lucca between 1817 and 1824, probably in the Orsucci Family, it was subjected to the tutelage of the Michele Ridolfi Commission established by Marie Louise of Bourbon in 1819. The theme of the enthroned Madonna placed in a loggia, surrounded by angels and saints represents a subject of great fortune in devotional paintings for domestic use.

Engravings are the protagonists at Salamon’s booth: “It is with Rembrandt, and in the Netherlands, that etching reaches its greatest development in the seventeenth century,” explains gallery owner Lorenza Salamon, “his curiosity pushes him to experiment with mixed techniques, to seek out supports other than the usual (such as papers imported from Asia), with a wholly personal style that will favor him in his own artistic affirmation.” His booth will feature, among others, works by Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (such as theSelf-Portrait at the Window from 1648, etching, drypoint and original burin) and Albrecht Dürer (a specimen of the famous Melancolia I, from 1514, original burin, monogrammed and dated in plate). At Capozzi’s there will be a bust of Domenico Parodi: an early 18th-century Genoese work, it depicts Giovanni Antonio Giustiniani, who was doge from 1713 to 1715. The slightly biased cut, the proud gaze, the bustling wig, are undoubtedly details that contribute decisively to the effectiveness of the image, so much so that many of the characteristics that historians remember of this character-decision, pride, shrewdness-can be found in this marble.

Objects for all kinds of collections can be discovered at AMART: Mayfair Rare Books and Manuscripts, which specializes in antique books, incunabula and manuscripts, from the 15th to the 18th century, always reserves a special fondness for architectural treatises and art books, focuses on a project The Grand Tour that aims to rediscover the beauty and magic of the bel paese through the suggestions and testimonies of its ancient visitors and the timeless works of its best artists and engravers. Of particular note are Michele Marieschi with his Magnificentiores selectioresque Urbis Venetiarum prospectus, i.e., 21 etched plates, and Giovanni Battista Piranesi with the Différentes vues de quelques restes de trois grands édifices, qui subsistent encore dans le milieu de l’ancienne ville de Pesto, autrement Possidonia, qui est située dans la Lucanie, 20 plates etched in etching.

It is intended for fans of old books or classical music the Troisieme Concerto à violon principal composé et dedié à H.M. l’Imperatrice et Reine éxécute par l’auteur aux concerts de la Salle Olimpique (1806) by Charles Philippe Lafont. Magnificent specimen, most likely printed in a small number of copies and never intended for sale. Lafont was the most important violinist and violin composer of the first half of the 19th century in France. Edition of the greatest rarity, of which the Orsini Gallery claims to have found no trace in any European library or specialized bibliography. Format is in-Folio; 3 parts totaling 55 pages of music (in some engraved on recto only). Each of the parts has a beautiful copper-engraved frontispiece with title and Imperial Eagle. Splendid red morocco binding at the Great Arms of Napoleon, with the plates surrounded by a gilt frame decorated with alternating bees and stars.

Taking a leap into the 20th century, Copetti Gallery, for its first participation in AMART, chose to bring a wall relief No. 1, in bronze, by Mario Negri, from 1955-56. Exhibited in 1958 at the Venice International Art Biennale, it comes from a private collection. The same booth will also feature unpublished works by Mirko Basaldella and Giacomo Manzù. Highlights include an important wood sculpture by Mirko Basaldella, very rare and distinctive painted concrete panels and works on paper from the figurative to the informal period, and by Manzù a gilded bronze sculpture entitled Divertimento (Crane). Galleria Tornabuoni will offer among other works a masterpiece by Giorgio Morandi, namely a still life from 1961, while Sperone Westwater in his first time at the Milan show will exhibit a striking Version of Chuck 12 by Julian Schnabel from 2003, an oil painting on waxed canvas. Also on display at Tornabuoni’s is a panel by Giovanni di Niccolò Mansueti, a Madonna and Child identified by the scholar Matteo Vinco, for a find that was confirmed by a black-and-white reproduction in the photo library of Federico Zeri, who is credited with attributing the work to Mansueti.

The public visiting the 2023 edition will also find an event with a revamped look: completely redesigned the entrance, restaurant and loggia by Studio Pellizzari, which used Dedar fabrics, Arredi Pedrali; Viabizzuno lighting. The prize for the best booth will be awarded on the evening of Nov. 8 by a jury composed of interior designer Clara Bona, established young curator and art blogger Maria Vittoria Baravelli, architect specializing in museography Michele Piva, and art historian Stefano Zuffi.
