Milan Art Week kicks off: a whole week of modern and contemporary art initiatives

From March 28 to April 3, 2022, Milan Art Week returns: many initiatives dedicated to modern and contemporary art over a whole week.

From March 28 to April 3, 2022, Milano Art Week returns, the widespread schedule in the Lombard capital, in conjunction with Miart, which for a whole week offers exhibitions, guided tours, special openings and performances, involving institutions, foundations, public and private entities in a shared calendar of initiatives dedicated to modern and contemporary art. Also for this edition the main partner is Banca Generali, which offers everyone the chance to visit the Museo del Novecento free of charge on Saturday and also participates in the opening of the BG Art Gallery, a new exhibition space in the headquarters at Piazza S. Alessandro 4.

Significant events dedicated to contemporary art include a double opening on Monday, March 28 at the Pavilion of Contemporary Art(Artur Zmijewski. When Fear Eats the Soul, through June 12) and at GAM|Galleria d’Arte Moderna(As Above, So Below. Elisa Sighicelli). The first solo exhibition in Italy of Artur Zmijewski, among the most radical figures on the Polish art scene, will present a selection of historical and recent works and three new site-specific and PAC-produced works. The artist’s work reflects a concern with current socio-political issues and investigates the mechanisms of power and oppression and the relationship between extreme emotions and their physical expressions. Throughout the week it will be possible to access the exhibition with a discounted ticket. On the other hand, until July 3, 2022, the first solo exhibition in a Milanese museum by artist Elisa Sighicelli will be open at GAM As above, so below, a never-before-seen narrative dedicated to the museum’s deposits with a special installation conceived by the artist herself: about twenty-five images including photographic prints on paper, a print on plaster, and two sculptures from GAM’s sculpture depository.

Opening on March 30, 2022 at Pirelli HangarBicocca is an exhibition dedicated to Steve McQueen, with a new exhibition project and a new selection of works. An opportunity to delve into the artist’s career in the visual arts and highlight the evolution of his practice and its most innovative aspects. On the same day, the exhibition Useless Bodies? by artist duo Elmgreen & Dragset opens at the Fondazione Prada: a project that explores the condition of the body in the post-industrial era. And again on March 30, in the cremation room of the Crematorium Temple, the special project Lullaby, the result of a collaboration between Museo del Novecento, Maurizio Cattelan’s archive and the Monumental Cemetery. Maurizio Cattelan’s work Lullaby, created in 1994 by the artist by collecting in sacks the rubble of the PAC caused by a bomb in the July 27, 1993 Mafia bombing, is being exhibited in Milan for the first time. Particularly significant for the history of Milan and for the civic museums, the work will be donated by the artist to the City of Milan and, at the end of the exhibition, will become part of the civic collections (from Nov. 6).

In terms ofpublic art, three new ArtLine works will be inaugurated in Citylife on April 1, joining other works in the large park: Mario Airò’s Atrium of Looking into the Future, Alfredo Jaar’s Red Pavilion, and Kiki Smith’s Guardians. The theme ofperformance art is addressed on April 1 in Piazza Sempione with Output, a cycle of performances in public space by Riccardo Benassi and Michele Rizzo with the support of Fondazione Marcelo Burlon, which will run from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m.

On Saturday, at 7 p.m., the Museo del Novecento hosts One by Marie-Caroline Hominal, in collaboration with Istituto Svizzero: a performance in three chapters interrogates the fall, the art market and authorship.

In addition to the many ongoing exhibitions, Triennale Milano features Christodoulos Panayiotou’s lecture-performance Dying On Stage on Saturday and Romeo Castellucci’s Milan, filmed by Yuri Ancarani, on Sunday.

At the National Museum of Science and Technology lecture and workshop by artist Angélica Dass with Humanae Project.

The Casa degli Artisti, Archivio Emilio Scanavino and Casa della Memoria will also launch exhibition projects during Art Week. There will be no shortage of special activities in the spaces that present exhibitions that have already started, from Palazzo Reale to Museo delle culture, from Fondazione Stelline to Museo Diocesano. Studio museo Francesco Messina, Casa museo Boschi Di Stefano, Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro, Fondazione ICA Milano, Gallerie d’Italia, Acquario civico, Castello Sforzesco, Fondazione Francesco Somaini, and Archivio Vincenzo Agnetti are also participating.

Among this year’s novelties is the participation of Base Milano with the photographic installation Crypto-propaganda. Luca Santese (Cesura) from March 28 and the Magic carillon project in collaboration with Collezione Ramo.

This edition will also feature a number of nonprofit spaces with special openings (Assab One, The Open Box, ViaFarini, FuturDome, Careof, Ordet, SpazioLima@Studiopconp) and the Trinacria exhibition project, set inside the Cittadella degli Archivi of the City of Milan by Isorropia Homegallery. Guided tours of the ORME project at Ortica are also scheduled.
