The show Last Judgment. Michelangelo and the secrets of the Sistine Chapel, which will debut at theAuditorium Conciliazione in Rome on March 15, 2018. This is an innovative show that combines two souls: the philological account of the birth of Michelangelo’s masterpiece, the frescoes of the Sistine Chapel (with special emphasis on the Last Judgment that gives the show its title), possible thanks to the scientific advice of the Vatican Museums themselves, and the technological tools of live entertainment.
In 60 minutes, Giudizio Universale viewers will be able to relive the complicated relationship between Michelangelo Buonarroti and Pope Julius II, learn about the genesis of the Sistine Chapel frescoes through Michelangelo’s own narrative, and find themselves in the midst of the making of the Last Judgment, which will come to life throughout the space around the audience. The project, the first production of the new Artainment house, was conceived by television producer Marco Balich (former artistic director of the Italian pavilion at Expo 2015, executive producer of the opening ceremony at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics and creator of the Heineken Jammin’ Festival), who in order to realize it enlisted the collaboration of Sting, who composed the original musical theme, and Gabriele Vacis, who oversaw the theatrical supervision.
“The Vatican Museums,” says director Barbara Jatta, “are dynamic museums where tradition and innovation find a perfect synthesis. Tradition that is protection, restoration, conservation and enhancement of the collections through studies, research, di dactics, international projects, conferences and exhibitions. Innovation that is indispensable today for the functioning of an institution that welcomes more than six million visitors a year and is open to new forms of communication. The collaboration of the Vatican Museums with Artainment Worldwide Show for this show should be seen precisely in this line of synthesis between tradition and innovation.”
“After having directed many Olympic Ceremonies around the world,” Marco Balich says instead, “I am proud to create a show in our beautiful Italy, relying on the rigorous scientific advice of the Vatican Museums. This is an operation that aims to involve and excite the new generations with the masterpieces of our artistic patrimo ny. We want to make young people proud and aware of who we are and where we come from.”
