The exhibition Bigger than Me. Heroic Voices from the Former Yugoslavia, curated by Zdenka Badovinac, is on view until Sept. 12, 2021, and features 54 artists, including Abramović, who aim to explore the artistic ferment of the countries of the former Yugoslavia with a particular key. The history of the territory is read through gestures of contemporary heroes, reflecting in particular on the themes of welcome and coexistence. In fact, the exhibition is divided into several sections with very significant titles, including freedom, equality, brotherhood, hope, otherness, and metamorphosis.
With the beginning of her career that took place in Belgrade in the early 1970s, Marina Abramović pioneered performance art, resulting in some of the most important works of this genre. Exploring her physical and mental limitations, she endured pain, exhaustion and danger in her quest for emotional and spiritual transformation. The artist was awarded the Golden Lion for best artist at the 1997 Venice Biennale. In 2010 she held her first major retrospective in the United States, and at the Museum of Modern Art in New York she performed for more than 700 hours in the performance The Artist is Present. She founded the Marina Abramović Institute(MAI), a platform for immaterial and long-term work to create new possibilities for collaboration among thinkers from all fields.
Her most recent work is Walk Through Walls: A Memoir, published by Crown Archetype on October 25, 2016. His retrospective The Cleaner opened at Moderna Museet in Stockholm in February 2017 and toured seven other European venues, ending at the Museum of Contemporary Arte, Belgrade, Serbia in 2019. In September 2020, the Bayerische Staats Oper presented the world premiere of 7 Deaths of Maria Callas, which will continue to tour to other venues. In 2023 she will present the solo exhibition After Life at the Royal Academy and become the first female artist in the institution’s 250-year history to occupy the entire gallery space with her work.
