Marche National Gallery opens up to dance and gesture with Virgilio Sieni's project

From July 15 to 17, 2022, the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche will host the project "Il silenzio vicino": a triptych of choreographic works and a lecture on gesture. The project is conceived by Virgilio Sieni.

On July 15, 16 and 17, 2022, the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche in the Palazzo Ducale in Urbino presents Il silenzio vicino, a project by the Centro Nazionale di Produzione della Danza Virgilio Sieni in collaboration with Galleria Nazionale delle Marche / Palazzo Ducale in Urbino and Amat Associazione Marchigiana Attività Teatrale.

The project is articulated by reflecting on the humanistic construction of the Ducal Palace. Like a listening human body, the Palazzo has the ability to resonate and dialogue with a larger city fabric to expand to the countryside. The light that shapes the open spaces is like a messenger that filters into the corridors and rooms making new volumes appear again and again. The basements breathe the sense of soil and primary materials, water above all, triggering a natural process that serves the “holistic” posture of the building. The Near Silence intends to investigate the question of listening and aura: to listen to the places and works in order to return a geography of gestures that articulates the palace starting from the underground spaces; at the same time to feel touched by the aura that still emanates from the place to be returned through three choreographies on the sense of space and its becoming silent and friendly.

For a week, the Palace will be inhabited and frequented by verifications and rehearsals, studies on the body and in the discovery of spaces that from the external, overhanging openings on the city will lead to walkways in the basement to the upper floors.
Duets, choreography created on the proximity between two dancers, will be set in the upper floors of the building.Near Silence, an event participated in by dancers, artists and citizens of the area, will decline from the Courtyard of Honor to the underground rooms distributing, in three large spaces, the forms of the encounter according to a gesture borrowed from the reading of some of the works housed in the Gallery. For a week the rehearsals will inhabit these places to make them a laborious and poetic workshop again. On the third day and in the Courtyard of Honor, the Gesture Lesson will take place, a lesson intended as a moment open to all citizens to read through some simple shared gestures the physical and figural meaning of Piero della Francesca’s Flagellation. Finally, in the Library on the ground floor, there will be the performance Flagellation, a way of embodying those figures according to the dynamism of a body searching for its perspectives and escapes.

A triptych of choreographic works conceived by Virgilio Sieni and performed by Compagnia Virgilio Sieni with the participation of Urbino citizens.
