Lucca, Conversations in St. Francis kicks off this year dedicated to the theme of travel

Friday, Nov. 10, and Sunday, Nov. 12, in Lucca, Claudio Strinati, interviewed by Federico Giannini, and Patrizio Roversi, open Appunti di viaggio, the 10th edition of Conversazioni in San Francesco, the series of meetings scheduled at the Church of San Francesco.

With two appointments, this weekend in Lucca kicks off the Conversations in San Francesco, the series of meetings desired by the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca, which this year, for its 10th edition, hosts personalities from the world of literature, art and social activism for a multifaceted discussion dedicated to the theme of travel. First to take the stage at the Church of San Francesco is art historian Claudio Strinati, who on Friday, Nov. 10, at 9 p.m., interviewed by Federico Giannini, director of Finestre sull’Arte, will guide the audience to a destination that is both abstract and tangible at the same time, that of Italian art and its unparalleled masterpieces, in the encounter Understanding Beauty is the Function of the Soul. On Sunday, November 12, however, it will be the turn of TV host Patrizio Roversi, on stage at 6 p.m. with the show Beyond Oil. Both meetings are free admission, but to attend one must book online at www.fondazionecarilucca.it starting at noon on Tuesday, Nov. 7.

From Rome to Venice to Palermo, passing through Florence and Naples, but also Cremona, Udine, Padua and Ferrara: in the first conversation Claudio Strinati, interviewed by Federico Giannini, will tell about treasures and great protagonists of figurative art, revealing exciting and little-known backgrounds. Just as in an imaginary, modern Grand Tour - the journey that between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries constituted a crucial moment in the formation of Europe’s intellectuals - of which the scholar has proposed a highly topical transposition in his recent novel Il giardino dell’arte (Salani, 2020).

With Oltre il petrolio (Beyond Oil ) Patrizio Roversi, famous face of Turisti per caso, takes us instead on an exploration between climate and environment. What is left in the Amazon region of Sucumbios, Ecuador, after the wild extraction season? What will happen, with global warming, to the landscape of Tibetan Mustang, the Global Seed Valut in the Svalbard Islands-the seed bank whose function is to preserve the world’s crop diversity-or the Sand Walls of San’a in Yemen? Directed by Miletta Corli, with musical accompaniment by saxophonist Maurizio Camardi and guitarist David Soto Chero, through experiences, anecdotes and footage he himself has shot during his many travels, Roversi tells what is, indeed, “beyond oil,” beyond our intensive exploitation of natural resources. Nothing apocalyptic though, because the presenter makes us smile and reflect, with his lighthearted and entertaining style.

The review will continue on Saturday, Nov. 18, with writer Fabio Genovesi, who, taking his cue from his latest book Pure Gold, will tell us how America is discovered by chance, and will conclude on Saturday, Nov. 25, with the meeting Songs, Prayers, Resistance and Literature: the Thousand Colors of Persia, dedicated to a destination as specific as it is complex, Iran. The evening will feature journalist Rory Cappelli in dialogue with Pegah Moshir Pour, human and digital rights consultant and activist, and Farian Sabahi, senior researcher in contemporary history at the University of Insubria.

The 10th edition of the Conversations is part of the rich program of events organized by the Fondazione Cassa to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the reopening of the San Francesco Monumental Complex, which has become a beacon of culture and dissemination.

The organization is by Elena Aiello
