The city of Lucca is hosting, from Nov. 16 to Dec. 8, the 2019 edition of Photolux Festival - Biennale Internazionale di Fotografia di Lucca . The Lucca initiative, directed by Enrico Stefanelli, offers a rich program revolving around the theme Mondi | New Worlds, with more than 20 exhibitions, spread across six exhibition venues in the city center, lectures, workshops, portfolio readings, and meetings with the protagonists of international photography.
“In a year in which important events in history reach their anniversary,” says Enrico Stefanelli, “we wanted to turn our gaze, through photographic narration, to some of the salient moments of the 20th century. Narrated in the now or in the then, we collected stories that tell of conquests, revolutions, and paths that led beyond walls. From the conquest of the moon, through the fall of the wall that divided Berlin into two cities, the Iranian revolution and the Tiananmen massacre, to Lenin’s Russia.”
The exhibition itinerary opens ideally from the Palazzo delle Esposizioni of the Fondazione Banca del Monte di Lucca, with the group show entitled 2:56 AM. To the Moon and Back (curated by Enrico Stefanelli, Chiara Ruberti, Naima Savioli, Alessia Locatelli, Chiara Dall’Olio, Alessandro Romanini and Andrea Pacifici), which celebrates the 50th anniversary of the first man on the Moon through a selection of images from theNASA archive and works by authors such as Antonio Biasiucci, Vincent Fournier, Alberto Giuliani, Jorge Peréz Higuera, Kaja Rata, Edoardo Romagnoli, Penelope Umbrico, Francesco Zizola and others, as well as video and sound installations, objects and sculptures, which restores the different approaches with which photography (contemporary and historical), visual and plastic arts, cinema, comics and music have looked at Space and more specifically at the Moon.
Visitors are also taken on an experiential and educational journey into the imagery of one of the achievements that have most marked all of humanity. The exhibition, under the patronage ofENAC - Ente Nazionale per l’Aviazione Civile (National Civil Aviation Authority), serves as a pretext to reread the history of mankind, made up of challenges, individual and collective efforts that have changed its course: small and great revolutions that have torn down walls and built new Worlds.
The initiatives of Photolux Festival 2019 have a common element that sets them apart, namely documenting the human desire to push beyond their limits, thanks to a program that ranges from the discovery of new planets through space exploration to anin-depth analysis of the social and political revolutions of the twentieth century, particularly of the last fifty years (fromIran to China, fromEastern Europe to Cuba), events that have consigned to history places different from those hitherto known, transcending boundaries and conventions.
