Leonardo's Adoration of the Magi returns to the Uffizi after restoration

Leonardo da Vinci's Adoration of the Magi has returned to the Uffizi after six years of restoration. It will be on public view from March 28 with a dedicated exhibition.

After a six-year restoration at theOpificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence, theAdoration of the Magi created by Leonardo da Vinci is returning to the Uffizi Gallery.

Overnight last night, under escort of Carabinieri, the packed work was lifted by a mechanical arm into the Uffizi forecourt so it could reach its current location in the gallery of statues and paintings.
Uffizi Director Eike Schmidt, who oversaw the work’s transport, said everything went well, with no damage.

The restoration, which took place under the direction of Marco Ciatti and Cecilia Frosinini, made it possible to recover the full legibility of the work, as well as unexpected color tones.

Leonardo’s Adoration of the Magi will be visible to the public from March 28 with the opening of the exhibition dedicated"Leonardo’s Magical Cosmos. The Adoration of the Magi restored," which will end on Sept. 24.

Commissioned from Leonardo in 1481 by Augustinian monks for the church of San Donato a Scopeto, the work remained unfinished following the artist’s departure for Milan the following year; later the commissioners had another altarpiece depicting the same theme executed by Filippino Lippi, who finished it in 1496. In the exhibition opening on March 28, Filippino Lippi’s version will also be on display alongside Leonardo’s work.
