From Saturday, June 25 and Sunday, June 26, 2022, the appointment with Una Boccata d’Arte, the contemporary art project spread throughout Italy promoted by Fondazione Elpis in collaboration with Galleria Continua, with the participation of Threes Productions, which enhances the encounter between art and historical, artistic and landscape heritage, returns. Throughout the summer, until Sept. 18, 20 of Italy’s most beautiful and evocative villages, one for each region, will be the scene of 20 art interventions by 20 artists of different ages, cultures, geographical origins and artistic languages.
Also new for this third edition will be the presence of a 21st artist with a special project that will connect all the villages.
From north to south, from the Aosta Valley to Sardinia, Una Boccata d’Arte will see in situ the unseen installations of: Antonio Della Guardia (1990, Salerno, Italy) in the village of Morgex (AO) in the Aosta Valley; Natàlia Trejbalovà (1989, Košice, Slovakia) in Neive (CN) in Piedmont; Alice Ronchi (1989, Ponte dell’ Olio, Piacenza, Italy) in Montemarcello, hamlet of Ameglia (SP) in Liguria; Alina Kleytman (1991, Kharkiv, Ukraine) in Cigognola (PV) in Lombardy; Giulia Mangoni (1991, Isola del Liri, Frosinone, Italy) in San Lorenzo Dorsino (TN) in Trentino-Alto Adige; Lucia Cantò (1995, Pescara, Italy) in Malamocco, a hamlet of Venice (VE) in Veneto; Riccardo Benassi (1982, Cremona, Italy) in Pesariis, a hamlet of Prato Carnico (UD) in Friuli-Venezia Giulia; Diana Policarpo (1986, Lisbon, Portugal) in Montegridolfo (RN) in Emilia-Romagna; Serhiy Horobets (1985, Lviv, Ukraine) in Sorano (GR) in Tuscany; Luis López-Chávez (1988, Manzanillo, Cuba) in Panicale (PG) in Umbria; Eva Marisaldi (1966, Bologna, Italy) in San Costanzo (PU) in Marche; Dessislava Madanska (1991, Smolyan, Bulgaria) in the village of Fumone (FR) in Lazio; Victor Fotso Nyie (1990, Douala, Cameroon) in Rocca San Giovanni (CH) in Abruzzo; Tommaso Spazzini Villa (1986, Milan, Italy) in Castropignano (CB) in Molise; Fabrizio Bellomo (1982, Bari, Italy) in Albori, hamlet of Vietri sul Mare (SA) in Campania; Simone Bacco (1995, Rome, Italy) in Spinazzola (BT) in Apulia; Hanne Lippard (1984, Milton Keynes, Great Britain) in Grottole (MT) in Basilicata; Anna Zvyagintseva (1986, Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine) in San Donato di Ninea (CS) in Calabria; Isaac Chong Wai (1990, Guangdong, China) in the village of Castiglione di Sicilia (CT) in Sicily; Ludovica Carbotta (1982, Turin, Italy) in Aggius (SS) in Sardinia.
Selected by the promoters of the initiative for their talent and research, 20 artists, including emerging voices and more established names, are invited to spend a short residency period within a village, entering into a relationship with its history and identity. After a phase of listening, exploration and planning, each artist gives back to the community a site-specific installation, produced specifically in relation to the territory and the lived experience: thus 20 interventions are born, embracing different art forms, from painting to sculpture to photography, video, sound and performance, the result of understanding the place and the valuable dialogue woven with its inhabitants. Visible throughout the summer, the installations created contribute to the growth of a proximity tourism aimed at a wide and transversal audience and invite to rediscover, with a new look, stories and corners of beauty spread throughout Italy.
“Una Boccata d’Arte is a widespread, nationwide project of collective participation in beauty and culture, outdoors and in safety, created as a reaction to the pandemic to bring a signal of encouragement to local communities and at the same time create an opportunity for expression and experimentation for talented young artists,” explains Marina Nissim, President of Elpis Foundation. “I am happy that it is becoming a recognized and expected annual event, able to propose to the public itineraries that are always interesting, villages to discover and artists full of creative energy, activating a virtuous circle that enhances Italian heritage and territory through art.”
Says Maurizio Rigillo, Director of Galleria Continua: “Since the first edition we have paid great attention to the village-artist combinations, trying to look at both the specificity of the places and the research conducted by each artist. The result was a mosaic of excellent works, which were able to draw inspiration from local realities, involve the inhabitants, and create wonder and amazement in visitors, confirming how peculiar in the creation of the work is the physical context and relationship with people.”
With the desire to create a capillary project throughout the country, in each region there is a coordinator to support each artist at every stage of the project, who facilitates their inclusion within the village through opportunities to meet with the citizenship, co-design with local workers and artisans, and facilitate dialogue between the artist himself, the promoters of the initiative and the public administration.
Una Boccata d’Arte reconfirms itself as a unique exhibition experience that takes the public on an extraordinary journey to discover contemporary art and the most authentic heritage of our country, a true open-air museum that year after year offers an unprecedented cultural experience aimed at everyone, not only insiders but especially tourists, the curious and enthusiasts.
