Kicking off guided tours and lectures to discover Rome's historic villas and parks

Starting May 3, the series of lectures and guided tours "The Villas Tell" will lead to the discovery of Rome's historic villas and parks.

A series of lectures and guided tours in Rome’s historic villas and parks promoted by Roma Capitale, Assessorato alla Cultura, Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali, entitled Le ville raccontano (The villas tell) will start on May 3. A series of free events related to specific themes of green culture and landscape, to learn about and explore the heritage of Rome’s historic villas.

Guided tours will be conducted by art historians and archaeologists from the Capitoline Superintendency who will accompany the public to discover little-known places and stories in the capital’s most important parks or inside buildings now transformed into valuable museum venues.

The first meeting will be dedicated to "The Places of Food in Villa Borghese. The history of banquets and banquets held in the Villa from the 17th to the 19th century; the other meetings will lead to the discovery of the Casino dell’Aranciera, now the Bilotti Museum, the house-museum of Pietro Canonica and the Casina delle Civette of Villa Torlonia by tracing the history of its transformations.

The lecture series will kick off on June 7 at the Casino dell’Orologio in Villa Borghese, a historic building of particular architectural merit from the late 18th century that overlooks Piazza di Siena. Scholars and experts from the Capitoline Superintendency but not only will be involved, invited to enhance and promote Rome’s historic villas: topics will cover various specific themes of green and landscape culture, such as the use of water in historic gardens, their literary and public perception, design choices, special features of furnishings and patrons: from Villa Glori and the Sculpture Park, to the artist’s studios of Villa Borghese, from the basement of the Orangery to the story of the role of water in Roman gardens between the 15th and 16th centuries, from the history of Villa Corsini to the singular “furniture” affair of Villa Sciarra on the Janiculum.

The new cycle is part of Patrimonio in Comune, the Capitoline Superintendency’s program of cultural and educational proposals aimed at promoting knowledge of Rome and its historical and cultural heritage and developing an active citizenship aware of the city’s history and beauty.
