From October 3 to 9, 2022, Kid Design Week, a festival of creativity for adults and children, returns to Terni. A week full of events intended to create unprecedented relationships between the individual and the idea of experience, starting with wide-ranging reflections on the child’s graphic sign. The theme of freedoms has been chosen for the second edition of the festival, which will involve workshops, talks, ateliers and the educational moments of the program.
The festival, organized by Utilità Manifesta / design for social APS in collaboration with the Municipal Educational Services of the Municipality of Terni, the Department of Education Assessorato alla Cultura Comune di Terni, with the contribution of the Fondazione Carit Terni, brings together the creative spaces of Terni, such as the Caos - Opificio Siri Arts Center, born from the conversion of the former SIRI chemical factory, which now houses permanent exhibition spaces, but also a large area dedicated to contemporary art exhibitions, as well as the Sergio Secci Theater and spaces dedicated to educational workshops and artist residencies. Kid Design Week, realized under the patronage of Aiap Associazione Italiana Design della Comunicazione visiva and Adi Associazione per il Disegno Industriale, also boasts this year important collaborations with realities of the national territory: among them, the Mook collective, the Parole O_Stili Association, young emerging artists.
" Kid Design Week is an invitation to draw, giving space to wonder, to personal perception of reality, to one’s own creativity, which in addition to being an object of stimulation and fun becomes a tool in the service of education, training, and education," said Francesco Maria Giuli, of Molly&partners agency, art designer of the festival. "Prompted by what is moving in the micro and macro social fabric, we decided to dedicate the 2022 edition of the Festival to the theme of freedom, understood as a multifaceted entity. In fact, we speak of freedom in the plural because the aspiration for freedom, which defines us as human beings, leads us to find our direction in life according to our vocations; but freedom is also the assumption of responsibility: we are responsible for the choices we make and those, for example, that we entrust to others; that guide our future. Through the graphic sign, the doodle, the child begins to seek his or her own, unique and personal path of growth, maturing through manual gesture ideas of freedom. As he grows up, this is realized in the open and perpetual search for his own direction. With Kid Design Week we want to give space for reflections on the forms that freedom can take or inspire, the feelings it can move, the visions it ignites."
The Festival is about children and with children, but it speaks to adults: thus, in addition to a wide range of workshop and educational moments for the 0 - 14 age group, it reserves ample space for adults, who are educators, pedagogues, teachers, and parents. It therefore intends to draw attention to theimportance of creativity, not only on a pedagogical level, but also as a space for adults to recover their talents; and it does so starting with drawing, which is not only a manual activity, but is expression and communication. Graphic sign and visual communication, music, drawing, and movement will inspire actions and reflections on the themes of freedom and relationship, freedom and sustainability, and freedom and choice.
These are just some of the initiatives proposed at Kid Design Week:
The Mook group, the brainchild of Carlo Nannetti and Francesca Crisafulli, teachers at the European Institute of Design in Rome, focuses on the idea of regeneration starting with the collection and assembly of material discarded by time. Mook rebuilds with imagination. On the occasion of Kid Design Week he leads to the discovery of self-building with recycled materials as an act that the child owes to himself. Materials, noise, manual dexterity and imagination are part of the workshop. Through recovery, the child projects himself into the world he desires. Mook again takes children by the hand with the Before Me workshop, which emphasizes the importance that questions take on for the child: questions that the child feels the need to ask, for the answers to which, he or she is willing to seek out and put himself or herself on the line, beginning to design his or her own idea of the world.
An important focus on language will be taken care of by theParole O_Stili Association. Established with the aim of empowering and educating Net users to choose non-hostile forms of communication. Words O_Stiles, promotes the values expressed in the Manifesto of Non-Hostile Communication by organizing awareness and training initiatives to make people aware that virtual is real and that hostility on the Net has concrete, serious and permanent consequences in people’s lives. Speakers in Terni will be Erika Grillo, actress, theater pedagogue and ambassador of the Parole O_Stili Association, who will hold workshops for children, as well as co-participated parent-child activities to discover digital tools and social media, in a family dialogue about the opportunities of the web.
Also dealing with language and words will be Sabrina D’Alessandro, visual artist and founder of URPS - Ufficio Resurrezione Parole Smarrite, with her Accendipensieri: Discovering Old Words and Inventing New Words, a workshop for young and old that focuses on the joy of language and imagination, playing to discover old words, on the reasons that make them leave the scene, setting lost, lost, forgotten words free, returning them to the present time to project them into the future and inventing new words.
Among the young emerging artists will be Jacopo Spampanato in art Senape, a cartoonist who will offer a co-participated and constructed workshop performance with children entitled Aesop Buffo, during which the comic strip will be a tool for observing reality. An interactive show, to bring out through laughter the thoughts of the little ones. Giulia Ceccarani, illustrator, will lead the creation of the large mural designed by the students of the Liceo Artistico O. Metelli of Terni and left to the city on the walls of the Chaos, a museum building in the city center. Illustrator Giada Fuccelli will lead a talk on animation techniques and a workshop where they will teach how to transform one image into another, seemingly distant one, thanks to the magic of animation with the rotoscoping technique.
They will talk about freedom, environmental resources and healthy eating with Slow Food Umbria, which within the Festival will carry out the Taste Workshop It’s Time for Kids (We) Make (the) Snack in collaboration with COOP. The workshop is for the younger generation and parents who enjoy the pleasure of learning more.
Some of the scheduled initiatives will be held at Hydra spaces, the Multimedia Museum of the Marmore Falls, which at 165 meters is the highest waterfall in Europe.
