The city of Pisa will host the International Conference of European Cathedrals, now in its 8th edition, on October 18 and 19, 2018. The initiative was conceived and organized by theOpera della Primaziale Pisana.
During these two days, representatives of the bodies that manage a number of European cathedrals and their monumental complexes, the most significant restoration institutes and some associations belonging to the world of museums will dialogue on the theme"Musealization, conservation, replacement of works of art."
Representatives from Pisa Cathedral, Milan Cathedral, Venice Basilica, Florence Cathedral, Florence Cathedral, Siena Cathedral, St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome and Fidenza Cathedral, Cologne Cathedral, Freiburg Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, Toledo Cathedral, Burgos Cathedral, Prague Cathedral, Vienna Cathedral, Albi Cathedral and Bern Cathedral will participate in the conference.
Representatives of the most important restoration institutes will also be present: theIstituto Superiore per la Conservazione e il Restauro in Rome and theOpificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence. Also hosted will be the Dombaumeister E.V. (Master Builders’ Association), the Italian Ecclesiastical Museums Association and the Living Stones Association.
Since the late 19th century, the question of replacing and musealizing works of art from monumental complexes has arisen with the consequent consideration of conservation and enhancement.
In the Opera della Primaziale Pisana the idea of a Conference of European Cathedrals was born eight years ago; each year a different theme is discussed among the organizations that manage the most important European monumental complexes.
