In October, a new edition of RavennaMosaic. Biennial of Contemporary Mosaic

From October 5 to November 24, 2019, the sixth RavennaMosaic. Biennial of Contemporary Mosaic.

The sixth edition of the Contemporary Mosaic Biennial will be held in Ravenna from October 6 to November 24, 2019. RavennaMosaic is promoted and organized by the Municipality of Ravenna and with the coordination of MAR - Art Museum of the City of Ravenna thanks to the valuable contribution of the Fondazione del Monte di Bologna e Ravenna, Edison and Marcegaglia.

Works and artists from all over the world will meet in the city that is the capital of mosaics, and its most evocative places will be open to local and international artists: monuments, museums, cloisters and symbolic spaces of the city will become exceptional galleries where ancient art and contemporary art will be placed in dialogue.

On this occasion, the MAR - Art Museum of the City of Ravenna will host two major exhibitions: Chuck Close. Mosaics, curated by Daniele Torcellini, and Riccardo Zangelmi Forever young curated by Davide Caroli.

Since the early 1970s, Chuck Close has been an artist internationally famous for his portraits, painted on a monumental scale from photographs. He has explored a wide range of techniques, processes and materials over the course of his practice, culminating in his use of mosaic following his involvement in the public art project for the New York City Subway. The Subway Portraits series consists of twelve works, in mosaic and ceramic, commissioned by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s Arts & Design program in 2017.
The Ravenna exhibition will present the new series of mosaic works, accompanied by related works such as prints, tapestries, and photographs, and document the work done by Mosaika Art and Design and Magnolia Editions to create the works installed in the Second Avenue-86th Street station in New York City.

The works of Riccardo Zangelmi, Italy’s only LEGO® Certified Professional artist, allow us to become children again. It will be a creative journey through objects, memories and fantasies related to the world of childhood, thanks to more than twenty works made with over 800 thousand LEGO® bricks of different sizes and colors. To celebrate the city of Ravenna, the artist has created a sculpture depicting Dante Alighieri. Both exhibitions will be open until January 12, 2020.

Many other initiatives are planned in the city.
Palazzo Rasponi dalle Teste will host Opere dal Mondo, the traditional exhibition|competition curated by AIMC (Associazione Internazionale Mosaicisti Contemporanei) with a selection of works by international artists; this edition will have a Dante theme.

The Classense Library will open all its spaces to the Biennial, and theRavenna Academy of Fine Arts will present a project entitled Incursions: an interweaving of stories within which visitors can follow the threads of the new creative experiences of the youngest mosaic artists. In the reading rooms on the ground floor, a continuous dialogue between traditional books and mosaic books arises with Bibliomosaico, curated by Rosetta Berardi and Benedetto Gugliotta.

At Classis - Museum of the City and Territory will be held the exhibition Weaves of the Sea. From Ancient Mosaic to Modern Copy: an exhibition of Roman floor mosaics with a marine subject.
The exhibition will feature important mosaics from the National Archaeological Museum in Naples, the archaeological area of Populonia and copies of ancient mosaics from the collection of Maestro Severo Bignami. In particular, a mosaic dating back to the first century B.C. from the House of the Faun in Pompeii and belonging to the collections of the National Archaeological Museum of Naples will be on display.

The National Museum of Ravenna will instead present Intersections, curated by Emanuela Fiori and Giovanni.
