In Florence, a rich program of tours to discover the city's towers, gates and fortresses

From May 25 and throughout the summer, the City of Florence and MUS.E are offering a rich program of visits to explore the city's towers, gates and fortresses.

The City of Florence and MUS.E are offering from May 25, 2024 and throughout the summer a rich program of visits to explore the towers, gates and fortresses of Florence, all of which have endless stories to tell. Visitors will thus have the opportunity to enjoy unprecedented views of the city and delve into the history of Florence in its urban development.

It starts on the weekend of May 25 and 26 with Porta San Frediano, in collaboration with the Fondazione Angeli del Bello, which will remain open for visits from June 1 to Sept. 30 on Saturdays and Sundays from 5 to 8 p.m. During the same period, from June 1 to Sept. 30, the Torre della Zecca and the Torre San Niccolò, whose restoration work has recently been completed, will also be open for visits (Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 5 to 8 p.m., visits every half hour).

Added to this calendar are visits to the Fortezza di San Giovanni, better known as Fortezza da Basso, in collaboration with Firenze Fiera (Saturday, July 27, Saturday, August 24, Saturday, September 14, 4 to 5 to 6 p.m.).

Between the late 13th century and the first decades of the 14th century, at the height of its development, the city of Florence saw the construction of an imposing circle of walls to protect and defend its urban fabric, with a perimeter of more than 8 kilometers punctuated by a series of gates, towers and posterns. Renovated in modern times-just think of the construction of Forte Belvedere and the Fortezza da Basso-the medieval defense system was largely demolished in the 1860s, however, preserving a significant stretch of wall in the Oltrarno, the gates and towers, which have been affected in recent years by a plan of progressive enhancement by the city administration. It is in fact an important chapter in the city’s history: it is no coincidence that the original Arnolfo route ideally marks the boundaries of the site of the historic center of Florence as a World Heritage Site, with the recent extension towards San Miniato.

In fact, all proposals are designed in keeping with UNESCO and Agenda 2030 principles and are aimed at fostering increasingly effective accessibility to Florence’s cultural heritage and landscape by both casual visitors and the local community.

For Porta San Frediano, there is also an active collaboration with the Angeli del Bello Foundation, whose volunteers will offer the public a little insight into the care of the city and its beauty.

All visits to the gates, towers and fortresses are open to everyone, ages 8 and up; they cost 6 euros per person and are free for Florentine Card holders.
