For the first time,Italy is hosting the World Cities Culture Summit, the flagship event of the World Cities Culture Forum, the network of major world cities established in 2012 at the initiative of the Mayor of London to create a collaborative network among cities that hold cultural leadership on a global scale. The World Cities Culture Forum, at the time of its inception, has grown greatly and now includes forty-one cities: Abu Dhabi, Amsterdam, Austin, Barcelona, Bogota, Brussels, Buenos Aires, Chengdu, Dublin, Edinburgh, Guangzhou, Helsinki, Hong Kong, Istanbul, Lagos, Lisbon, London, Los Angeles, Melbourne, Milan, Montreal, Moscow, Nanjing, New York, Oslo, Paris, Rome, Sao Paulo, Brazil, San Francisco, Seoul, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Singapore, Stockholm, Sydney, Taipei, Tokyo, Toronto, Vancouver, Vienna, Warsaw, and Zurich.
The 2020 summit will take place Oct. 28-30, 2020, and, as mentioned, will be hosted for the first time in Italy: it has been specifically assigned to Milan, a city with a marked multiculturalism, lively cultural activity, and which has now taken on a role as a leading city on a global scale for all culture stakeholders. Milan’s will be the ninth edition of the World Cities Culture Summit: previous ones were held, in chronological order starting with the most recent, in Lisbon (where the 2019 edition was held), San Francisco, Seoul, Moscow, Amsterdam, Istanbul and London.
“Hosting the 2020 World Cities Cultural Summit,” says Culture Councilor Filippo Del Corno, “is for Milan the greatest recognition of a long-term process to enable Milan to become a capital of culture. Thanks to the boost given by Expo 2015, Milan has placed culture and creativity at the center of its development. During the summit, Milan will become the centerpiece of a policy debate on the key role culture can play in addressing the greatest challenges of our time: climate change, social inclusion, the creative workforce, and the relationship between center and periphery in our cities. All these issues will be addressed by city leaders from around the world together in Milan on October 28-30, 2020. We are really looking forward to hosting them in Milan.”
Justine Simons, councillor for culture and creative industries and city of London and chair of the World Cities Culture Forum said, “I am delighted that Milan will be the next host of our World Cities Culture Summit. Culture and creativity are critical to the success of our cities as they drive our economies, inspire young people and transform lives. The summit offers a great opportunity to share best practices around the world, and Milan will be a truly inspiring host for all of us.”
“By contrast,” says Paul Owens, co-founder of BOP Consulting and director of the World Cities Culture Forum, “culture and creativity are at the heart of Milan’s social and economic development. Its creative and cultural industries are at the forefront, with dynamic creative hubs throughout the city. The Summit will be a unique opportunity for our world cities to learn from Milan’s experience, share their expertise, and foster important discussions on cultural equity and quality of life for all communities in the city.”
So see you in exactly one year’s time in Milan for this important event.
