On the occasion of Remembrance Day, Fondazione Cinema per Roma and Casa del Cinema, as part of the Roma Capitale Memoria genera Futuro program of events, will present Charlotte, the animated film by Tahir Rana and Éric Warin that tells the true story of Charlotte Salomon. The screening about the German painter of Jewish origin who was killed in Auschwitz when she was only 26 years old will be held on Thursday, January 27, at 6:30 p.m. at the Casa del Cinema in Rome.
Considered by many to be the author of the first graphic novel in history, Charlotte Salomon produced a wide-ranging body of work in which painting, comics, film, and theater come together in poignant drama (we talked about her in this in-depth feature).
The true story of Charlotte Salomon, a young German Jewish painter who became an adult in Berlin on the eve of World War II. Gifted with an unbridled imagination and great talent, she dreams of becoming an artist. Her first love strengthens her determination. But the world around her changes rapidly and dangerously, disrupting her plans. When anti-Semitic policies begin to foment violence among the masses, Charlotte leaves Berlin for France, where she begins painting again and finds a new love. But her work is interrupted again, this time by a family tragedy that reveals a dark secret. Charlotte will find salvation in the monumental undertaking of painting the story of her life.
“What I saw in the script was a girl who wants to make decisions, but actually, as you read the story, you realize that it’s always only others who make decisions for her, whether it’s her parents, her grandparents or historical events,” explained director Éric Warin. “And I think that’s what the core of this story is all about: the way each of us is looking for our place in the world.”
“I think more and more filmmakers are embracing animation in order to tell stories for adults-I think animation is a great medium to convey emotions and moods,” added Tahir Rana. “With animation there is a different kind of immersion, so you accept the world of color, music, sound and expression, and you lose yourself in it completely.”
Charlotte’s producers include the two actresses Keira Knightley and Marion Cotillard who also lent their voices in the original version of the film, joined by performers Brenda Blethyn, Jim Broadbent and Sam Claflin.
Free admission to the film screening.
