Bearing the motto Be dear to everything is the 2019 edition of miart, number 24 of the international modern and contemporary art fair organized by Fiera Milano and directed by Alessandro Rabottini, with the support of Intesa Sanpaolo as main partner. There will be 185 galleries (including 70 international ones from Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, England, Mexico, Peru, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia, the United States, South Africa, Switzerland, Turkey and Hungary) arriving in Milan from April 5 to 7, in Hall 3 of fieramilano city: there will be no shortage of important presences, with some of the most important galleries worldwide. Explaining the motto chosen for this edition is director Rabottini: the verse “cherish everything,” he explains, “is not the title of miart nor is it its theme: a fair, in fact, is not an exhibition but an epression of the diversity and complexity of the art market in all its forms.”
“185 projects promoted by galleries from 19 countries,” emphasizes miart’s artistic director, “correspond to as many stories to be told over the course of just four days; three days of conversations open to the public and six awards and acquisition funds that draw more than 60 curators and museum directors, designers, artists and writers from 18 countries to the city; a myriad of exhibitions and performances that invade the city thanks to the public and private institutions and nonprofit spaces that bring Milano Art Week to life: of many numbers and data is often made the communication that accompanies a fair, so we asked ourselves what art really needed in a historical moment as chaotic as it is fruitful, and the answer was: attention. Art has the power to transform even the humblest aspects of reality because artists lay a caring gaze on it, and when as viewers we make this gesture of attention our own then perhaps we become more conscious viewers, and able ourselves to affect reality. Hence the invitation to ’cherish everything,’ and to pay homage to the work that the artists and galleries present at miart have developed over the year necessary for the preparation of the fair, because they are the protagonists of miart. The point is not how much the art of our time can change reality but how much it can make us active spectators of our time, accepting confrontation and experimentation alongside the consolidation of historical values. Milan is the place for this adventure because miart, of Milan, reflects the freest spirit: the international vocation and openness to inclusion and diversity.”
The galleries will be divided into six sections: Established, the main section, with 128 galleries offering modern and contemporary art, divided into Contemporary and Masters (curated by Alberto Salvadori, director of the ICA Milan); Generations, with eight dialogues between artists of different generations, from Giacomo Balla to Birgit Jürgenssen, from Piero Dorazio to Patrizio di Massimo (curated by Anthony Reynolds of the Anthony Reynolds Gallery, London, and Chris Sharp, writer and independent curator); Decades, with nine galleries that give life to a path that spans the 20th century in a decades-long scan (there will be in-depth looks at, among others, Duilio Cambellotti, Antonioetta Raphaël, Maria Lai, Carlo Scarpa, Sandro Chia, Jon Thompson, plus the decade 1910-1920 with the Avant-gardes); Emergent, 21 emerging galleries engaged in promoting the most recent generations of artists (curated by Attilia Fattori Franchini, independent curator); On Demand, 14 galleries involved in a cross-section devoted to works that live from their relationship with context, audience and buyer (curated by Oda Albera); Object, 12 galleries active in the field of collectible and limited edition design (curated by Hugo Macdonald, design critic and journalist).
The Fondazione Fiera Milano Acquisition Fund and the 5 prizes awarded by miart (Herno Prize, Fidenza Village Prize for Generations, On Demand by Snaporazverein Prize, LCA Prize for Emergent), Rotary Club Milano Brera Prize for Contemporary Art and Young Artists) will be selected by 18 international museum directors and curators. In addition, a new cycle of Miartalks will give rise to three days of meetings with the public involving more than forty international artists, curators and museum directors, collectors, designers and writers, gathered around the theme “The Common Good” (the theme of what the common good is, how it should be created and preserved will be explored in relation to the three main areas of miart, namely modern art, contemporary art and design, understood as spaces of relationship with the reality around us). And on the sidelines of the fair, Milan will be at the center of Milano Art Week, a rich calendar of exhibitions, events and special openings promoted in collaboration with the Municipality of Milan | Culture and featuring the city’s major public institutions, private foundations and nonprofit spaces (with the participation, among others, of Citylife / Sculpture Park, Chiostri di Sant’Eustorgio / Museo Diocesano, FM - Centro per l’Contemporary Art, Fondazione Adolfo Pini, Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro, Fondazione Carriero, Fondazione ICA Milano, Fondazione Nicola Trussardi, Fondazione Prada Milano, Fondazione Stelline, Gallerie d’Italia, GAM - Galleria d’Modern Art, Museo del ’900, Museo Poldi Pezzoli, Fondazione Prada Observatory, PAC-Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea, Palazzo Dugnani, Palazzo Reale, Pirelli HangarBicocca, Triennale Milano / Triennale Teatro dell’Arte).
