Guided tours of the Fortezza da Basso

After last summer's success, guided tours of the Florentine Fortezza da Basso are back. Here are the three dates.

Following last summer’s great success, guided tours of Fortress San Giovanni, otherwise known as Fortezza da Basso, are back. The Medici fortress once again opens to the public to show itself to its visitors.

“It was urged upon Duke Alessandro by his uncle the Pontiff to build a Fortress...”: this is how ancient chronicles recall the foundation of Fortress San Giovanni, whose design was entrusted to Antonio da Sangallo the younger. Intended for a dual function of defense against external and internal enemies, the fortress still shows much of its original structure, which also incorporates the medieval Porta Faenza. During the visit, curated by MUS.E, it will be possible to understand the architecture and defensive strategies, admire the city from the top of the keep and walk part of the underground patrol walkway. A journey through the centuries, from the Middle Ages to the Lorraine transformations to the rebirth, thanks to the recovery and modernization of the spaces by Firenze Fiera.

The opening of the historical route is part of the project to enhance and rediscover the defensive system of the city of Florence: after the reopening in 2011 of the Tower of San Niccolò, the Torre della Zecca, Porta Romana, Forte di Belvedere and the Bastion at San Giorgio have been added over the years.

It will be possible to visit the Fortezza da Basso on July 6, Aug. 31 and Sept. 7 at 9:30 am, 10:30 am and 11:30 am.
