The Lodi Ethical Photography Festival returns for its 11th year, from September 26 to October 25, 2020, in arevamped edition.
The theme chosen for an international program that intends to be prominent is Glances at the New World through Photography.
While waiting for the defined program, however, we have some anticipations: furlcro of the Festival will be the World Report Award. Six sections are planned, with their winners selected by the jury composed of Alberto Prina, Aldo Mendichi, Sarah Leen, and Peter Bitzer. Below are what they will be: the Master category, won by Russia’s Nikita Teryoshin with Nothing Personal - the back office of war, a journey behind the scenes of the global defense business and the back office of war; the Spotlight category won by Britain’s Mary Turner with her Dispossessed, an account of the social problems of northeast England due to the coal industry crisis; the Single shot section with Francesca Mangiatordi ’s single shot on the Cremona nurse; the Short story category won by Italy’sItalian Rosa Maraniello with Vitiligo, an intimate tale in the world of vitiligo; Germany’s Ingmar Björn Nolting won the Student category with Measure and Middle - a journey through Germany during the COVID-19 Pandemic; finally, the Mother Earth category won by Italian Dario De Dominicis with To the Left of Christ, which takes in Guanabara Bay, the natural harbor of Rio de Janeiro, where industrial development is grabbing land at the expense of traditional fishing.
Mother Earth will also be the name of the new space that encompasses three reportages on the theme: Pablo Ernesto Piovano ’s intense The awakening of ancient voices, in which story recounts the Mapuche community’s struggle for its own survival in South America; award-winning Canadian photographer Aaron Vincent Elkaim ’s A State of Erosion: 2016-2019, which chronicles the plight of Native communities in the province of Manitoba, Canada, in the wake of the hydropower crisis; Dutchman Jasper Doest with Flamingo Bob, the story of a red flamingo who became an official FDOC testimonial. These exhibitions will be held outdoors, in the city’s public spaces, streets and parks.
Great attention will be given to the section A Look at the World, which offers four routes: two proposed by AFP in which the gaze of different photographers will tell the Covid around the world and the recent protests in Hong Kong; Britain’s Andrew Testa with his A nation divided will tell, between 2015 and 2020, England at the time of Brexit; Australia’s Matthew Abbott will lead into the Black Summer, or the fire season that violently devastates his island’s hinterland every year.
New will be Stories of Courage, which will feature two striking exhibitions: American photographer Maggie Stebber documented the first facial transplant in the United States to a very young patient; New Zealander Robin Hammond with significant work on gender issues.
The world of humanitarian organizations will be quite articulate: starting with an exhibition by photographer Alessio Romenzi, who followed Doctors Without Borders in action just in the Lodi area during the Covid emergency.
Other spaces are planned for NGOs that use photography as a communication tool.
Unmissable is the appointment with the Voglino Prize, which this year was awarded to Giorgio Negro from Turin and his Pathos, in which he tells the duality of good and evil
Another novelty this year will be the involvement and support of the Municipality of Codogno. Through collaboration with Roma Fotografia and the magazine Il Fotografo, the impact of the virus that changed the planet will be told through stories that will offer both a global and a local view of the historical period we are living through.
Simultaneously with the Festival will take place FFE - OFF, a circuit of photographic exhibitions, displayed in stores, bars, restaurants, galleries, cultural circles and public areas of the city. The purpose of FFE - OFF is intended to be to enhance and disseminate the works of anyone who wants to submit their shots.
There will also be meetings, guided tours with photographers, portfolio readings, book presentations, and educational activities aimed at middle and high school students.
