Genoa, portrait of Giovanni Agostino Durazzo dressed Turkish-style returns to Palazzo Reale after nearly two centuries

After nearly two centuries, the portrait of Giovanni Agostino Durazzo dressed in the Turkish style by Flemish painter Franz Luyckx von Leuxenstem returns to the Royal Palace of Genoa. An in-depth meeting will be held for the occasion.

After nearly two centuries, the portrait of Giovanni Agostino Durazzo dressed in the Turkish style by Flemish painter Franz Luyckx von Leuxenstem, which remained on display until 1824 in the Tapestry Room in the mansion as a tribute to the lords of the house, returns to the Royal Palace of Genoa. The work, a large oil on canvas, depicts Giovanni Agostino Durazzo, father of Gerolamo Ignazio, who was among the most important creators of the decorative enrichment of the palace in the early 18th century, wearing a sumptuous gilded caftan, the symbol of his diplomatic mission to the Ottoman court in 1665, which brought great benefits to Genoa. Sold by the Durazzo family to the Savoys in 1824 and subsequently passed on the antiques market, the painting now returns to the Royal Palace thanks to the generous loan of a private collector to be admired by visitors.
To mark the occasion, an in-depth talk by Luca Leoncini will be held on Thursday, Feb. 13, at 5 p.m. Places are limited, and reservations are required at palazzorealegenova@cultura.gov.it. The reduced ticket costs 6 euros (free admission for eligible and MNG annual card holders).

On Friday, February 14 at 3 p.m., on the occasion of Valentine’s Day, the Royal Palace will also offer a tour dedicated to the love affairs that have marked the history of the sumptuous mansion. The tour will focus in particular on those sentimental ties that were not formalized by marriage but remained in the chronicles and epistolaries of the time, such as those between Luigi Amedeo of Savoy and Katherine Elkins, Ferdinand of Savoy, I Duke of Genoa and Olga of Russia, and Paola Franzone with her cicisbei.
Admission: 12 euros; reduced 2 euros (18-25 years); free for under 18, eligible and MNG annual card holders. Limited seats, reservations required at palazzorealegenova@cultura.gov.it

On Saturday, Feb. 22, from 3 p.m., date instead with Gira la moda, a creative workshop for children and families (ages 5-12). On the occasion of the exhibition of the portrait of Giovanni Agostino Durazzo, the Educational Service of the National Museums of Genoa offers an activity to explore fashion in the 18th century. Inspired by the painting, participants will make their own models with fabrics, paper and colors, creating an imaginary fashion show.
Duration: 90 minutes (including workshop). Cost: free for under 18, MNG annual card holders and eligible; special ticket 6 euros for accompanying persons (maximum 2 per child). Limited seats, reservations required at palazzorealegenova.servizioeducativo@cultura.gov.it.
