Genoa, kicking off the spring 2022 edition of Rolli Days

Genoa's Rolli Days, one of the most popular events for lovers of ancient art, renews its appointment with the spring 2022 edition, to be held May 13-15, 2022.

Spring Rolli Days 2022 is at the starting ribbons: the event with which Genoa has been celebrating its UNESCO World Heritage Palaces since 2006 will be held May 13-15, 2022.

This year, the event coexists with a very important cultural event for the city of Genoa. From March 27 to July 22, in fact, Genoa is hosting the Superbarocco Project, a moment of discovery and in-depth study of the Genoese Baroque, in conjunction with the exhibition that the Scuderie del Quirinale in Rome is dedicating to this extraordinary season of the city’s artistic culture. At Palazzo Ducale The Shape of Wonder. Masterpieces in Genoa 1600 - 1750 will feature some of the most important works of sculpture and painting from 17th-century Genoa, including through prestigious international loans. At the same time, the whole city will be involved in a sort of diffuse museum. Through I Protagonisti the city’s main museums and some other fascinating venues will host thematic exhibitions, dedicated to a single protagonist of the Genoese scene. For citizens and tourists alike, this is a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the culture of the “Siglo de los genoveses.”

The Rolli Days will therefore also participate in this journey on the streets of the Baroque, to discover how they lived, where they kept paintings and sculptures, and how the families of the Genoese aristocracy wanted to be represented.

The visits to the Palazzi dei Rolli, which have always been the heart of the event, will therefore be the thread that will link the places and works of the exhibitions, in a narrative that aims to present the historical and cultural context in which the great aristocratic families of Genoa commissioned the extraordinary works of art still visible in the city today. To explore Baroque Genoa, between the late 16th and 17th centuries, the majestic palaces of Via Garibaldi, the grand buildings of Via Balbi with the Royal Palace and the University buildings, the streets of the historic center with the jewels preserved in the National Gallery of Liguria in Palazzo Spinola and the late Baroque frescoes of Palazzo Centurione Cambiaso will be open to the public, not forgetting the suburban villas of Sampierdarena and the Castelletto and Albaro area, exceptional containers of frescoes of the highest level.

Baroque Genoa revolving around the world of the Palazzi dei Rolli also involves the extraordinary places of worship in the historic center. New in this edition will be visits to previously unseen and little-known spaces such as the sacristies of the great churches and basilicas of the city center. San Filippo, San Siro and the Basilica delle Vigne will open the doors of these places, showing the public extraordinary and almost unseen works. Leading the tours in most of the palaces and churches will be, as always, young science popularizers, professionals in the humanities ready to engage visitors with their enthusiasm and expertise.

During Rolli Days, Saturday, May 14, the Night of the Museums, the European event that enhances museums and their importance by opening their doors at unusual times, is also celebrated: a calendar of special events will be available for the occasion. In addition to the traditional guided tours, the event will be enriched by side events, installations and music, activities that will accompany the public, offering everyone the chance to experience an increasingly attractive and lively Genoa.

Then, during the weekend, the winning projects of Rolli Lab, the Call for Ideas launched by the City of Genoa that seeks innovative ideas to enhance the importance and impact for the city of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Genoa: The New Streets and the System of Rolli Palaces,” will be presented. The call is aimed at aspiring designers and entrepreneurs, start-ups, small and medium-sized enterprises, associations, spin-offs and individuals, and covers the themes of heritage conservation, its promotion and enhancement, citizen involvement in its management and the improvement of reception services and accessibility.
