Future St. Ursula Museum in Florence reopens to the public in September

For one month in September, the construction site of the former Florentine monastery, the future Museo Sant'Orsola, will reopen to the public. It will host site-specific artworks and a program of collateral cultural initiatives, with free admission.

From Sept. 2 to Oct. 1, 2023, the construction site of theformer Florentine monastery, the future Museo Sant’Orsola, reopens: for a month, it will once again be accessible with site-specific artworks and a program of collateral cultural initiatives, with free admission. The complex is at the center of a remarkable regeneration plan curated by French group Artea/Storia, which will be completed in 2025 with the opening of a museum, managed by a nonprofit foundation (in the process of being created), ateliers for artists, high craft workshops, spaces dedicated to training and co-working, a guesthouse, a literary café, and a restaurant.

The exhibition that displayed the works of contemporary artists Sophia Kisielewska-Dunbar and Alberto Ruce in June, when the former monastery site was first opened to the public, will also be open again for the occasion. The exhibition will be revised and enriched to tell the “behind the scenes” story with new aspects of the work of the two artists involved. Also planned is anew work by Sophia Kisielewska-Dunbar, who has exceptionally lent her monumental painting Dream of the Virgin for the occasion. Visitors will thus be able to discover the work that marked the beginning of Sophia’s artistic reflection on the role of women in art and, which led the future Museum to invite her as the first artist-in-residence at St. Ursula. Visitors will also see an alternative version of Alberto Ruce’s installation. If for her triptych oil-on-canvas painting Sophia Kisielewska-Dunbar drew on altarpieces formerly found in the convent and other historical Florentine collections, to imagine a female counter-narrative, Alberto Ruce involved women from the neighborhood as models for murals and works on canvas.

Parallel to the exhibition, the Museum of St. Ursula will also host a series of events throughout September organized by cultural associations and theater companies in the area.

Hours: Thursday through Sunday (continuous hours 9 a.m.-7 p.m.) with free admission. Guided tours Thursday through Sunday, 11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. (depending on the number of requests, additional tours may be scheduled). For guided tours write to info@museosantorsola.it
