From July 26 to August 25 in Sicily, among the baroque buildings of Ragusa Ibla, a Unesco heritage site, the 8th edition of Ragusa Foto Festival will be held. Since 2012, the Festival has constituted an opportunity for in-depth study and exchange dedicated to contemporary photography, with special attention to young talents, and the cultural promotion of Iblean Sicily.
The Festival has the patronage of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, MIBAC, theAssembly and the departments of Cultural Heritage and Family of the Region of Sicily, the Municipality of Ragusa, the Free Municipal Consortium of Ragusa and the Chamber of Commerce of Southeast Sicily.
The relationship between photography and the family has always been very close. This year Ragusa Foto Festival has decided to focus on this relationship. Photography has been the most “democratic” medium that has been able to decline the story of the family, telling of its many aspects and changes in the way it is understood in society. There is an ancient and profound approach from which one can conduct true anthropological and psychological analyses of the different paths of family history. A valuable source for reading its evolutions and transformations and from which one could start again because it is able to represent the new meanings reworked within the different cultural patterns.
The choice of the authors in the exhibition started from the criterion of representing the multitude of nuances of the definition of family, trying to give importance to aspects that usually find little space in the debate. Ragusa Foto Festival, telling about people and their stories, proposes a vision that can become an opportunity for confrontation both from a photographic point of view and to offer further reflections to young people and the public who attend the festival, on the strategic role of the first cell of the social fabric in the path of social, human and cultural formation of the younger generations.
The 2019 edition is curated by the Festival’s Scientific Committee composed of internationally renowned artist Mario Cresci, professor Aldo Bonomi sociologist and expert on the economy of territories, columnist for IlSole24Ore and director of Aaster, a social research institute in Milan, Alfredo Corrao professor of photography at MiBAC, Rosario Antoci professor at theAcademy of Fine Arts of Catania and Stefania Paxhia journalist and researcher, creator and founder of the Festival, with the valuable collaboration of Steve Bisson, curator, editor and professor of photography at the Paris College of Art and expert in anthropology and visual literature.
