Following the opening to the public, from the end of 2021, of the Moorish Greenhouse, from April 1 until June 24, 2023, the Moorish Tower, another evocative and imposing construction that, together with the Moorish Greenhouse, constitutes the architectural complex with arabesque lines, designed around 1839 by architect Giuseppe Jappelli for Prince Alessandro Torlonia, inspired by the Alhambra in Granada, will also be open to the public.
Every Saturday it will be possible to visit the two floors of the Moorish Tower and relive in part those suggestions and awe that must have impressed the few and privileged guests of Prince Torlonia.
A sumptuous dining room was set up in the highest room of the Tower, featuring large windows with cast-iron frames and stained glass and walls richly decorated with polychrome stucco. The room had a couch in the center that, by the action of a hidden mechanism, could be raised toward the ceiling, at the same time bringing up a laid table, prepared in the meantime, in the kitchen below.
The initiative is promoted by Roma Culture, Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali, with the museum services of Zètema Progetto Cultura.
The Moorish Tower will be open to visitors free of charge with compulsory reservation at the 060608 call center (operating daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.) by purchasing at the same time the entrance ticket to the Moorish Greenhouse (€4 full, €3 reduced, + €1 presale), also through the call center. On the other hand, everything is free for valid MiC card holders, but telephone reservations remain mandatory.
Visitors will be able to access every Saturday at 10:40 a.m., 11:20 a.m., 12 noon, 3:20 p.m., 3:40 p.m., 4:20 p.m.; a guide provided by the Capitoline Superintendence will conduct the visit. Groups with their own guide, on the other hand, will be able to enter at 10 a.m., 12:20 p.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m., 5 p.m., 6 p.m., again with mandatory reservations at 060608.
Reservations will be possible starting Tuesday, March 28 at 10 a.m.
Due to its particular morphology, the Moorish Tower will be able to accommodate no more than twenty visitors per shift at a time. The maximum duration of the visit is twenty minutes.
The visit to the Moorish Tower takes place through a path that includes 42 steps: therefore, it is not suitable for people with severe motor difficulties.
At the end of the visit to the Tower, the public can either continue their visit to the Greenhouse independently or leave the complex.
From April 1, the Moorish Tower of Villa Torlonia will be open to visitors. |
