Initiatives organized to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of St. Mark’s National Museum continue: free guided tours by museum staff on Saturday, Nov. 30, Saturday, Dec. 7 and Sunday, Dec. 8 at 10 a.m. and 12 noon.
On Sunday, Dec. 8, admission is free as part of MiBACT’s #iovadoalmuseo project, which includes a series of free access days in state museums.
The tour will start from the cloister and then move to all the other rooms in the complex: the Sala dell’Ospizio, where Beato Angelico’s great masterpieces are preserved, including the recently restored Guidizio Universale and the San Marco Altarpiece, the Sala del Lavabo and Refectory rooms, and the Sala del Capitolo, where Angelico’s majestic Crucifixion fresco can be admired. Instead, at the end of the first flight of stairs is the fresco of theAnnunciation, while the small cells on the second floor are frescoed by the celebrated artist for his confreres. These cells also welcomed St. Antoninus, Cosimo the Elder, and Girolamo Savonarola. Completing the tour is Michelozzo’s monumental Library that holds precious illuminated codices, the Small Refectory frescoed by Ghirlandaio with a depiction of theLast Supper, and the Foresteria.
On the occasion of the museum’s 150th anniversary celebrations, the Hospice Hall also welcomes an “illustrious guest,” namely Robert Campin’sAnnunciation from the Prado Museum in Madrid. Recently, the frescoed cells were the setting for the first time for Wolfganf Laib ’s installations and works for the exhibition Without Time, Without Place, Without Body organized by the Museo Novecento in collaboration with the Polo Museale della Toscana.
Guided tours are limited to a maximum of 25 people per shift. Reservations are required, by the Friday before, at 055 0882000 active from 2 to 6 p.m.
