Four new ecomuseums recognized in Campania

On April 16 in Naples, at the Chikù center in Scampia, the four Campania ecomuseums will present their projects: experiences in territorial regeneration, public art, collective memory, local traditions and sustainability, recognized by the region thanks to the new law on ecomuseums.

Campania enriches its cultural offerings with the official recognition of four ecomuseums operating in different areas of the regional territory. On April 16, at 11 a.m., in Naples, at the Chikù Center - Largo della Cittadinanza Attiva, the institutional birth of MOSS - Ecomuseo diffuso di Scampia (NA), Translogues - Contemporary Bussento Ecomuseum (SA), Ecomuseo dei Picentini - Le Terre della Felicità(SA), and ECuRu - Ecomuseo delle Cucine Rurali dell’Alta Irpinia (AV) will be celebrated.

Recognized by the Campania Region under Art. 4 of Regional Law 13/2023, the four projects tell a new way of living, narrating and protecting territories, integrating culture, memory, environment, participation and shared vision of the future.

The event in Scampia and the role of institutions

It will be the headquarters of the association chi rom e...chi no, at Largo della Cittadinanza Attiva, that will host the presentation day, in a context already known for its social and cultural commitment. The focus of the meeting will be the collective narrative of a heritage made up of tangible and intangible assets, cultural itineraries, installations, practices and rituals, but also the active participation of local communities that have contributed to the creation of ecomuseums.

Prominent institutional representatives will speak: Valeria Ciarambino, vice-president of the Regional Council and first signatory of the regional law on ecomuseums; Felice Casucci, councillor for administrative simplification and tourism; and Nicola Caputo, regional councillor for agriculture. A public opportunity to reflect on the value of these experiences and their potential as models of sustainable, social and cultural development.

A law to enhance communities

Regional Law 13/2023 formally established the recognition of ecomuseums in Campania, filling a regulatory gap and finally giving visibility to realities that, in many cases, have been working for years in their own reference contexts. The legislation enhances the role of communities in the knowledge, conservation and promotion of cultural and environmental heritage, restoring centrality to territories often considered marginal, but very rich in history, knowledge, biodiversity and human energy.

That of ecomuseums is a vision that goes beyond the traditional concept of the museum as a closed place, to open up to the territory and make it the protagonist. Not just a display of objects then, but a dynamic interweaving of educational, design, narrative and relational processes. All included in a perspective of environmental, economic and social sustainability.

A model that combines culture and social innovation

The thread that binds these experiences is territorial rootedness combined with the capacity for innovation. Ecomuseums are configured as true cultural attractors, capable of dialoguing with conscious tourism and education, opening up new opportunities also in terms of employment, enhancement of craft knowledge, public art, new technologies and social entrepreneurship.

Their strength lies in their ability to actively involve inhabitants, transforming them into custodians of heritage and protagonists of narratives. Thus experiential, visitable and usable paths are built, which are not limited to contemplation but activate processes of belonging, care and transformation. Ecomuseums thus become spaces of citizenship, lifelong education, intergenerational exchange and collective reflection.

An appointment to look to the future

The meeting on April 16 represents an important opportunity to network different experiences but united by an identical ethical and cultural tension. Schools and territorial networks that actively collaborate with ecomuseum projects will also be present, witnessing how these spaces are already living places, traversed by students, artists, farmers, the elderly, migrants, and researchers.

The day will end with an aperitif prepared by La Kumpania, another example of how culture, food and conviviality can dialogue creatively.
