Florence, Tuesday, Sept. 4 lecture by Antonio Paolucci on Giambologna's Rape of the Sabine Women

On Tuesday, September 4, 2018, Antonio Paolucci will give a lecture at the Accademia Gallery in Florence: topic, the model of Giambologna's Rape of the Sabine Women.

A lecture by Antonio Paolucci is scheduled in Florence on Tuesday, September 4, at 7:30 p.m., at the Galleria dell’Accademia, as part of the Voci fiorentine palimpsest: the protagonist of the lecture will be the raw earth model of Giambologna’s Rape of the Sabine Women, the sculptural group whose marble version is located under the Loggia dei Lanzi in Piazza della Signoria. The sculpture Paolucci will talk about is a rare large model made of lightweight materials: unfired earth loaded with straw, hair and wood fragments, on a wood and metal framework held together by ropes. This specimen so fragile and of such extraordinary size has been preserved exceptionally intact to the present day. During the meeting, a special look at the sculpture will be offered, sharing with the audience interesting information and suggestions, the result of a personal “connection” with the work treated.

Antonio Paolucci, an art historian, has been superintendent in Venice, Verona, Mantua and Florence, and has served as director of the Vatican Museums. The discussion in which he will speak will be characterized by colloquial tones and will pose a new way of viewing works through an original approach, giving a personal and therefore unique contribution to the understanding of art.

Admission is chargeable. For more information see the website of the Accademia Gallery in Florence.
