On December 15, 1587, the funeral was held of Francesco I de’ Medici (Florence, 1541 - Poggio a Caiano, 1587), the second Grand Duke of Tuscany, in office from 1574 until his death. Exactly 430 years later, on December 15, 2017, a study conference on this historical figure entitled “The Prince of Grand Dukes” will be held. Organized by the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi and and The Medici Archive Project, the conference will be held on the occasion of the exhibition "The Sixteenth Century in Florence. Between Michelangelo, Pontormo and Giambologna," currently on view at Palazzo Strozzi until Jan. 21, 2018.
The conference will be divided into two sessions: the first is titled “The Sixteenth Century in Florence. ’Lasciviousness’ and ’Devotion’” and will feature exhibition curators Antonio Natali and Carlo Falciani; the second, chaired by Cristina Acidini (President of the Board of Directors of the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi), is titled “Francesco I de’ Medici between Education, Determination and Remembrance” and will feature talks by Alessio Assonitis, who will focus on Prince Francesco’s education as desired by his father Cosimo I; Francesca Funis, who will speak on the subject of the construction of the Uffizi Gallery and the birth of the idea of a museum; Amelio Fara, who will illustrate the very close relationship that existed between Francesco I and Bernardo Buontalenti about the creation of the garden of the villa at Pratolino and the never-completed facade of Santa Maria del Fiore; and Marco Ferri, who will recount the affair that prevented the grand ducal couple, Francesco I and Bianca Cappello, from sharing eternal rest.
The conference will be held on Friday, December 15 from 2:30 to 7 p.m. at the Altana of Palazzo Strozzi in Florence. Admission is free while places last.
