From August 18 until October 25, visitors to Siena Cathedral will be able to see the uncovered floor once again this year. The floor of Siena Cathedral is an exceptional masterpiece composed of fifty-six marble inlays made from cartoons supplied by some of the great Renaissance artists, including Pinturicchio, Sassetta, Domenico di Bartolo, and Domenico Beccafumi. Made partly in graffito (i.e., with grooves traced on the white marble slabs later filled with black stucco) and partly in commesso (with marbles of different colors juxtaposed to create the figures), the inlays combine to form a unique masterpiece, also referred to by Giorgio Vasari as the most beautiful floor ever made. The meaning of the figurations implies an invitation to wisdom.
The floor of Siena Cathedral is normally covered in order to preserve its state of preservation: admiring it is therefore not always possible. The public can see it every day, Monday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tickets to access the Cathedral cost 7 euros. Reduced 5 euros for groups and schools. Info on the Opera del Duomo di Siena website. Reservations at opasiena@operalaboratori.com or 0577 286300.
