The new Murano Illuminates the World artist chandeliers will light up, from Nov. 22, 2024 to March 4, 2025, under the Procuratie Vecchie in St. Mark’s Square. Eleven internationally renowned artists, including Joseph Kosuth, Kengo Kuma, and Philippe Starck, have accepted the challenge to create glass chandeliers together with the masters of Murano that will be on display throughout the winter period. Murano glass returns to illuminate St. Mark’s Square in Venice with the second edition of Murano Illumina il Mondo, the project promoted by The Venice Glass Week and the City of Venice. All the artists involved have accepted the invitation to test themselves with Murano art glass by creating, together with the skilled Murano masters, original and fascinating projects, demonstrating the winning partnership between glass and contemporary art. Throughout the winter period, it is therefore possible to admire eleven splendid chandeliers that will light up at nightfall. The artists and designers-who were selected by a Scientific Committee composed of Rosa Barovier Mentasti, glass historian; David Landau, Trustee of Pentagram Stiftung; Chiara Squarcina, Scientific Director of the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia; and curators Mario Codognato and Alma Zevi-have joined the Murano Illumina Il Mondo project, sharing the goal of giving visibility to the island of Murano not only as a craft industry but also as an international center of experimentation and collaboration.
The artists and architects who have joined the project are: Emmanuel Babled, Deborah Czeresko, Fiedler O Mastrangelo, Joseph Kosuth, Kengo Kuma, Philippe Starck and Aristide Najean, Marina and Susanna Sent, Arturo Tedeschi, Hans Weigand, and Kimiko Yoshida, joined by pupils of the Abate Zanetti School of Murano. The furnaces that produced the chandeliers are: Barbini Specchi Veneziani, Berengo Studio, Giorgio Giuman, ISS Abate Zanetti, Marina and Susanna Sent, Massimiliano Schiavon Art Team, Najean & Sy, NasonMoretti, Nicola Moretti + Vetrate Artistiche Murano, Salviati and Seguso Gianni Murano. Coordination of the production and in particular the relationship between artists and furnaces was entrusted to Matteo Silverio. Each of the eleven chandeliers was designed, engineered and created specifically for Murano Illumina il Mondo respecting specific parameters of size, weight and structural characteristics to ensure total respect for the delicate location where they are installed. Finally, please note that the Organizing Committee of The Venice Glass Week is composed of: Municipality of Venice, Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, LE STANZE DEL VETRO - Fondazione Giorgio Cini and Pentagram Stiftung, Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti and Consorzio Promovetro Murano.
“In the prestigious setting of St. Mark’s Square, the encounter between the ancient art of Murano glass and the mastery of eleven internationally renowned artists is renewed, who have chosen to celebrate the Serenissima by creating new chandeliers. Venice’s centuries-old traditions are thus taking shape through unique pieces,” says Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro "After last year’s great novelty, we have decided to repropose the second edition of Murano Illuminates the World. It will be a great open-air exhibition, in the heart of the city, which can be visited with maximum freedom. A tribute to the excellence of master glassmakers, at a crossroads of research, quality and innovation, in Venice, the oldest city of the future."
“The Organizing Committee of The Venice Glass Week, long committed to the enhancement of Venetian art glass through the festival that takes place in September, for the second year has completed the realization of this ambitious project,” continues Giovanna Palandri, Chancellor of the Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti and Chair of the Organizing Committee of The Venice Glass Week. “A Scientific Committee of the highest profile was formed with the arduous task of selecting world-renowned artists and pairing them with furnaces and masters capable of interpreting the proposed forms. Thus were born these 11 extraordinary chandeliers, authentic works of art, which, from the most beautiful square in the world, will brighten the Christmas of all who visit our city.”
