Dutch Design Week 2017 gets underway

The 16th Dutch Design Week 2017 kicks off, October 21-29 in Eindhoven, the Netherlands.

A week entirely dedicated to design: this is Dutch Design Week, now in its 16th year. DDW 2017 will take place in Eindhoven from October 21 to 29. More than six hundred events including exhibitions, presentations, lectures, and meetings, centered around this edition’s theme (in fact, each year DDW proposes a different central topic), which will be Stretch (“distension,” “stretching”): an invitation to artists and the public, the presentation reads, “to leave their comforts behind and reach for the sky.”

But the program is quite rich and dense: in fact, a great deal of space will also be reserved for the theme of technology and the digitization of society, as well as topical issues concerning social and economic issues, with particular reference to the role that art and crafts can play in today’s world. Events will be held in various locations throughout Eindhoven, starting with museums such as The Van Abbe Museum or the Textielmuseum, which will host exhibitions.

DDW’s goal is to provide an international platform for designers within the Dutch cultural climate (DDW organizers make it clear that by “Dutch design” they do not mean a certain group of artists or a certain style, but an attitude aimed at functionality, free thinking, humor, and unconventionality), to offer opportunities, to focus on talent, and to develop cultural reflection.

DDW is spread over 110 locations and will host 2,500 designers this year. More than 200,000 visitors are expected in Eindhoven. All information can be found at www.ddw.nl (in English and Dutch). DDW is presented by Dutch Design Foundation, main sponsor ABN AMRO, sponsors VOlvo and Smurfit Kappa.
