Dante for all: six months of events in Naples for the 700th anniversary of the Supreme Poet's passing

Naples celebrates the 700th anniversary of Dante Alighieri's passing with Dante for All: six months of events and initiatives to pay homage to the Supreme Poet.

From June to December, six months to celebrate the seven hundredth anniversary of Dante Alighieri’s passing in Naples through a series of events among the city’s institutions and cultural subjects: the aim of Dante for All is to promote knowledge of Dante and the civic, historical and linguistic values linked to his figure.

In the Dante celebrations in Naples, the Vittorio Emanuele III National Library and the University Library are involved with two major exhibitions that will be inaugurated in September and will give the general public an opportunity to admire to precious manuscripts and rare editions. With the libraries, the Department of Law of the University of Naples Federico II and the Society of Naturalists are part of the Neapolitan committee; alongside these institutions are the associations Mine Creative, Patto Locale per la Lettura “Reading Forcella,” headed by the Annalisa Durante Library, and the art of sculptor Pietro Marino with an installation in the braille alphabet.

Naples is one of the cities where Dante has had a significant cultural influence over the centuries, as evidenced by the reception of his poetic production as early as the 14th century, when the Divine Comedy was composed. The work, as evidenced by various codices preserved in the two libraries, was received with appreciation by distinguished authors who studied the poet and by Italian and foreign artists who tried their hand at illustrating the work, the texts of which are always preserved in Naples. Particularly in the 18th century and then in the Risorgimento and post-unification era, studies on the poet are lively.

Kicking off the program will be on June 24 the Society of Naturalists with the first Conversation, where Dante, Galilei and today’s astrophysics “dialogue” with each other, broadcast on all channels of the web station “Radiò,” and, a few days later, on June 29, there will be the inauguration of the installation Editio princeps. Cocito by Pietro Marino, with the collaboration of Michele Prudente, in the Cortile delle Statue in Mezzocannone 8.

The collaboration of different realities made it possible to propose Dante through many socio-cultural perspectives and initiatives, accessible to everyone, from university law students, middle school students discovering their neighborhood, the blind and visually impaired to the same Dante experts and scholars who love rare editions, and the passionate public.
