The first edition of A Night at the Colosseum is kicking off: from Thursday, July 4, the Colosseum Archaeological Park will in fact open the Flavian Amphitheater to night tours. A guided tour lasting about an hour has been organized for the occasion, which runs along the first order of the monument, the arena floor and the basement. The tours, scheduled every Thursday from 8 p.m. to midnight, with last admission at 10:30 p.m., are limited to a maximum of 25 people at a time.
The visit will be mainly dedicated to telling the story of the Colosseum from the point of view of the spectators and the protagonists of the spectacles that took place throughout the day, including hunts(venationes) and gladiatorial fights (munera). It starts from the North fornix, formerly the Emperor’s main entrance, where we will delve into the imperial entrance and stucco decorations, then from the arena floor, we will get a full view of the cavea and an account of the shows offered by the emperors. It continues to the basement, where it will be possible to explore the new permanent exhibition Performances in the Colosseum Arena. The protagonists, curated by Alfonsina Russo, Federica Rinaldi and Barbara Nazzaro. The exhibition includes a renewed permanent display focusing on the protagonists of the spectacles, namely the gladiators and the animals engaged in the venationes. Visitors will be able to observe the holographic projection featuring the gladiators advancing from the darkness of the eastern cryptoporticus, along with reconstructions of the armor reproduced from the originals preserved in major Italian and international museums. These include a collaboration with the J.J. Winckelmann Museum of Antiquities of the City of Trieste, which has lent the relief from the island of Coo depicting the combat between the Reziarius Kritos and the Secutor Mariskos and in which a Greek inscription declares that the Reziarius has been definitively “freed from the barracks” and has ended his career. Finally, the trail will explore the structure of the underground corridors through a moonlit walk along the catwalk to the western maneuvering chamber. After ascending the stairs under the Triumphal Gate, the itinerary will conclude with the multimedia installation The Painting of Jerusalem.
