Aquileia Film Festival, the art and archaeology film festival organized by the Fondazione Aquileia in collaboration with Archeologia Viva and Firenze Archeofilm, opens from July 23 to 26, now in its 10th edition.
The format is the tried-and-true one: four evenings in which cinema, archaeology, art and great scientific popularizers interviewed by Piero Pruneti, director of Archeologia Viva, enliven the UNESCO site that this year celebrates 2,200 years since its founding.
The splendid square of the Basilica dei Patriarchi every evening from 9 p.m. (free admission) is transformed into an open-air movie theater, and the public is called upon to choose the winner of the Aquileia Award, a mosaic made by the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli, from among the films in competition, chosen from the best of international film production on archaeological and historical themes.
The opening night on Tuesday, July 23, will be held again this year in collaboration with Sky Arte: at 9 p.m. we will immerse ourselves in the Venice of the 1500s with a screening of Tintoretto - a rebel in Venice and a conversation-interview with Roberto Pisoni, director of Sky Arte, and Melania Mazzucco, writer and screenwriter of the film.
We will travel to Mesopotamia (July 24) with an investigation by director Alberto Castellani into the past and present of the land between the two rivers and to Crete (July 24), which between 3000 and 1400 B.C., was the cradle of the first great civilization of the Greek world: the Minoan civilization. We will then move on to Oman (July 25) where a team of French scientists is trying to understand how the inhabitants of these lands managed to thrive in such a hostile environment by creating innovative water management technologies.
We will then go to the ancient region of Pisidia (July 25) in the Taurus mountain range in southwestern Turkey and then reachEgypt to discover the secrets of Pharaoh Tutankhamun, the warrior king (July 26), one of the last pharaohs of the 18th dynasty. His fabulous treasure, discovered intact nearly a century ago, made him the most famous and most studied pharaoh in history...
Also confirmed is the presence of a great friend of the Festival, the undisputed guru of popular science - Alberto Angela - who will close the tenth edition on Friday, July 26, by fascinating the audience with the exploits of Cleopatra, the queen who challenged Rome and conquered eternity, the protagonist of his latest literary effort.

Notes on a Violated Heritage, who will tell us about his life between exceptional discoveries and archaeological expeditions, and Marcello Barbanera (July 25), professor of archaeology and history of Greek and Roman art and director of the Museum of Ancient Art atLa Sapienza University in Rome.
