Brunelleschi's dome turns 600: the rich program of initiatives

The Dome of Florence Cathedral is six hundred years old: its construction began on August 7, 1420.

On August 7, 1420, construction of the Dome of Florence Cathedral began based on a design by Filippo Brunelleschi.

To celebrate the six hundredth anniversary of this important event, the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore has planned a rich program of initiatives: concerts and performances, 3D video mapping night projections on the exterior of the Dome, conferences, book editions, and virtual tours.

It will start on April 16, 2020 with the concert La Cupola armonica to be held in Florence Cathedral: for the occasion, the world premiere of Sognatore di cupole for choir, treble voices and instruments, specially composed by Salvatore Sciarrino on commission from the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore, will be performed.
It will continue on Oct. 8, 2020, in the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, with the theatrical performance, entitled Con il cielo dentro, from an unpublished work by Davide Rondoni that Giancarlo Cauteruccio is staging for the Celebrations, in a world premiere performance.
The concerts and performances will close on November 20, 2020, in the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, with the drama in music Oltre l’azzurro. Brunelleschi’s Dream, with music by Silvia Colasanti and text by Maria Grazia Calandrone.

For the first time in history, in September 2020 there will be moving night projections in 3D video mapping on some of the sails of Brunelleschi’s dome that will tell, through three-dimensional graphic elaborations, the most significant aspects of its construction. The project, entitled The Impossible Machine, is by architects Roberto Corazzi and Samuele Caciagli.

Also, in the Antica Canonica di San Giovanni, the international conference Attorno alla Cupola di Brunelleschi: cantieri di cattedrali a Confronto (Italy, France, Spain) organized by the Opera in collaboration with the Deputazione di storia patria per la Toscana will be held on September 25 and 26, 2020. The conference aims to compare the work organization of Brunelleschi’s undertaking with that of some of the great cathedrals of the medieval West. In the same Antica Canonica will be organized on Nov. 19 and 20 the conference L’Uovo di Filippo. Brunelleschi’s Dome between History, Fortune and Preservation, which will address the issues arising from the presence of the dome in Florence’s landscape profile: from its historical context to its fortune in literature and iconography, from the history of its architecture to the restoration and preservation of the monument.

Also planned is the presentation of the volume dedicated to Brunelleschi’s dome and the frescoes of Vasari and Zuccari, edited by Scripta Maneant editore, with exclusive images from the new photographic campaign. The event will be held on May 14, 2020 at Teatro Niccolini.

Finally, from May 4, 2020, it will be possible to participate in the tour A Holographic Vision of the Dome. Between physical and virtual reality in the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo.
