Until August 30, Bristol Cathedral is hosting Luke Jerram ’s traveling project entitled Museum of the Moon. A giant installation that brings inside the English city’s cathedral--a large moon. The latter measures seven meters in diameter and features detailed NASA images at 120 dpi resolution of the lunar surface. Each centimeter of the internally lit sculpture represents 5 kilometers of the lunar surface, on an approximate scale of 1:500,000.
The artist is known worldwide for his large-scale public artworks: he creates sculptures, installations and performances. The Museum of the Moon project has been presented both indoors and outdoors: among the venues chosen are Rochester Cathedral, the Natural History Museum in London, and the Beijing Water Cube; the giant moon has traveled to be exhibited in Toronto, Reykjavik, Lille, Lienz, Bilbao, Glasgow, and many other locations. It has also arrived in Italy, in Milan, in the Cozzi Pool, visible from June 15 to 23, 2019. Its presence has already been announced in France, Luxembourg, Romania, Belgium, and several cathedrals in the United Kingdom, including Durham Cathedral, Wells Cathedral, and in Bath Abbey.
The installation, in Bristol Cathedral, is accompanied by music composed by Dan Jones, winner of BAFTA and at the Ivor Novello Awards.
