From December 4 to 8, 2021 and from December 23, 2021 to January 9, 2022 (with the exception of December 25), Palazzo Re Enzo, one of the city’s most prestigious and historic buildings located in Piazza Maggiore, will open to the public in Bologna.
Usually closed to visitors, it will be possible on these dates to enter the palace and discover all the anecdotes of Palazzo Re Enzo and the man who made it famous with the help of a detailed audio guide. It is one of the greatest examples of medieval architecture. Palazzo Re Enzo, called Palazzo Nuovo to distinguish it from Palazzo del Podestà, was built between 1244 and 1246 as an extension of the municipal buildings. Three years later it became the ’residence’ of the captive king of the Battle of Fossalta, to whom the palace owes its name: King Enzo of Sardinia, son of Frederick II, who spent the next twenty-three years there until his death in 1272. Numerous legends flourished in popular literature around his figure.
