Biennale Gherdëina, here are the artists of the eighth edition of the Dolomites exhibition

From May 20 to September 25, 2022, in the unique setting of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Dolomites, 'Persons', the eighth Gherdëina/Val Gardena Biennale, will take place in Urtijëi/Ortisei and the surrounding landscape of Gherdëina/Val Gardena.

Dedicated largely to commissioning and exhibiting new works of art, Persones Persons, is the eighth edition of the Biennale Gherdëina under the curatorship of Lucia Pietroiusti and Filipa Ramos . It will present a series of new installations, sculptures, sound pieces, performances, textile works and participatory experiences alongside existing and historical works, in dialogue with the unique landscape of Val Gardena.

The artists selected for the eighth edition of the Biennale Gherdëina are: Etel Adnan, Chiara Camoni, Alex Cecchetti, Gabriele Chaile, Revital Cohen and Tuur van Balen, Jimmie Durham, Simone Fattal, Barbara Gamper, Kyriaki Goni, Ignota Books, Karrabing Film Collective, Britta Marakatt-Labba, Lina LapelytÄ—, Eduardo Navarro, Angelo Plessas, Tabita Rezaire, Sergio Rojas, Giles Round, Thaddäus Salcher, Martina Steckholzer, Himali Singh Soin and David Soin Tappeser, Ana Vaz and Nuno da Luz, Bruno Walpoth, Zadie Xa, and Benito Mayor Vallejo.

The Biennale also collaborates with Museion, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Bolzano, through the presentation of an exhibition of works from the museum’s collection that echo the festival’s themes and lines of research. In parallel, Sarah Solderer and Mara Vöcking will curate an exhibition at the Tublà da Nives Cultural Center in Selva di Val Gardena, which looks at the intertwining of ecology, tourism and landscape occupation, mapping the practice of an entire generation of young artists/artists in the region.

“Persones Persons will move along two lines,” explain curators Lucia Pietroiusti and Filipa Ramos. “The first considers the forms of personhood, legal and non-legal, of nature and landscape, asking how artistic expressions can contribute to the recognition of Earth rights and the reduction of barriers. The other deals with ancient and future memories of the paths of people, animals, plants and materials through systems of migration, seasonal displacement and transhumance in the region and its landscapes. To how they form and constitute each other in an ongoing process of influence and attunement.”

“Since its first edition, Biennale Gherdëina has been characterized by the exchange and relationships between people, stories, legends, languages and traditions, because we strongly believe that sharing different ideas, visions and feelings is a key element for social welfare and community development,” says Doris Ghetta, Director of Biennale Gherdëina. “Here in Val Gardena, in the unique landscape of the Dolomites, nature and local culture meet the international art community and together imagine a more sustainable and transparent way of living and making art.”
