BIAF, the Florence Biennale of Antiques returns to presence for its XXXII edition

From Sept. 24 to Oct. 2, 2022, Palazzo Corsini will host the XXXII edition of BIAF - Biennale Internazionale dell'Antiquariato di Firenze. About eighty galleries for the world's oldest market exhibition.

Back in attendance after three years, in the exhibition spaces of Palazzo Corsini in Florence, the BIAF - Biennale Internazionale dell’Antiquariato di Firenze now in its 32nd edition. The oldest market exhibition in the world and the one of absolute reference for great Italian art, at the head of which are as President Mayor Dario Nardella and as Secretary General Fabrizio Moretti assisted by a Steering Committee, will in fact open its doors from September 24 to October 2, 2022.

There will be about eighty galleries winding their way through the prestigious halls of the historic Florentine building, with a new layout by interior designer, set designer and director Matteo Corvino. The protagonist will be great Italian art, from the Florentine Renaissance to the Italian and international twentieth century, but also Roman, Etruscan and medieval sculptures and artifacts, as well as examples of Italian and international design that influenced the taste of the most recent century. Great returns and important reconfirmations of international dealers will bring the best of paintings from every era, drawings, sculptures, furniture, ceramics, and jewelry.

Among the initiatives that will enliven the days of the exhibition will be a preview screening of Eternal Memories, the world’s first docu-game that aims to tell younger generations about ancient art through a playful moment. Available in Italian and English, Eternal Memories can be downloaded for free on your devices through major App platforms. The game is produced for BIAF by Golem Multimedia, with the collaboration of TuoMuseo and the support of Consultinvest.

Innovation Partner of this 32nd edition is EY: an EY corner, dedicated to innovation in which to experience the link between new technologies and art, and a museum space inside the Metaverse with works of art awarded in previous editions of BIAF will be available for attendees to enjoy, even remotely, an immersive experience. The exhibition in the Metaverse will be enhanced by interactive digital activities. EY will also host a panel on the role of technologies in the art world.

The traditional gala dinner, which will be set up throughout the Palazzo, will be curated by Gucci Osteria da Massimo Bottura, the Michelin-starred restaurant led by co-executive chefs Karime López and Takahiko Kondo and located inside the Gucci Garden in Piazza della Signoria.

The BIAF has a great tradition of patronage: Fabrizio Moretti and Eleonora and Bruno Botticelli donated Durante Alberti’s altarpiece depicting the Trinity and Saints Andrew, Mary Magdalene and Christina to the Cathedral of Sansepolcro to commemorate the memory of their respective parents, compensating the church for a serious loss suffered in the past. Thanks to the financial support of the Biennale dell’Antiquariato, the Fondazione Archivio Museo Richard Ginori della Manifattura di Doccia also kicked off a major campaign to restore a significant nucleus of precious wax models that had been severely damaged by moisture following the closure and abandonment of the Museo Ginori: among them the group depicting Apollo and Marsyas, taken from a work by Florentine sculptor Giovan Battista Foggini, and the groups with Venus Plucking Love and Leda with the Swan, whose bronze archetypes are due to the invention of late Baroque sculptor Massimiliano Soldani Benzi.

Simultaneously with the BIAF, the second edition of Florence Art Week will also be held: the Maison of Via Tornabuoni, the Galleries of Via Maggio, Via de Fossi, Borgognissanti and the boutiques of Ponte Vecchio will offer activities and events reserved for VIP card holders.

The market exhibition has obtained the patronage of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, the Region of Tuscany, the City of Florence, the Metropolitan City and the Chamber of Commerce. The project is supported by Fondazione CR Firenze with the contribution of Intesa Sanpaolo.
