Barcelona will be the host city for the 2024 edition of Manifesta, the major European contemporary art exhibition. The decision was made by the event’s board, which met in Amsterdam on November 27 and chose, for the 15th edition, Barcelona as the main venue and ten other cities in Catalonia as satellite venues.
“The decision to choose the venue well in advance, so that we can understand future strategies,” Manifesta’s board noted, “is a way of thinking about alternative models of cultural institutions in the post-Covid society. Manifesta’s strategy continues to be focused on how art and culture can fight polarization and divisions. Barcelona’s bid is in line with Manifesta’s mission because it seeks to be based on the common goal of engaging citizens, institutions and communities with the aim of rethinking our world through artistic creativity and social engagement.”
For the city of Barcelona, this will involve activating “a creative design laboratory of artistic prototypes that guide toward new cultural institutions,” the bid dossier states. Barcelona will “seek to explore themes such as the structural renewal of the relations between contemporary art, territorial contexts and communities, the systematic inclusion of art in educational structures that promote critical thinking and imagination, the democratization of the governance of cultural institutions themselves, and the inclusion of artists in productive ecosystems that lie outside the art world.”
The 2024 edition will be the 15th edition of Manifesta and will follow the 2022 edition, to be held in Priština, Kosovo, and this year’s 13th edition, being held in Marseille. Italy has hosted Manifesta twice: in 2008 (Trento, Rovereto, Bolzano and Fortezza) and in 2018 (Palermo).
